Beginning in 1986, the company established coffee shops serving espresso-based drinks. This began a trend of aggressive expansion.

The business strategy was/is to set up Starbucks locations near already successful, locally-owned cafes and siphon off the customer base.

As of 2022, the company reported operating over 35,000 stores in 80 countries. It's ranked 120th on the Fortune 500 list.

Starbucks made news for the wrong reasons in 2018. Two Black men were arrested while waiting for a friend at a Philadelphia location without making a purchase.

The police were allegedly called by the Starbucks' manager who reported Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson for loitering.

The arrest sparked protests in Philadelphia and nationwide stemming from accusations of racism. White patrons were purported to have been seated and not buying anything.

Starbucks corporate responded by announcing that individuals could spend time at locations without spending money. Stores even changed their restroom codes to "12345."

The détente between non-paying patrons and Starbucks stores has come to an end. Beginning Jan 14, 2025, the company is requiring purchases to "linger" and use restrooms.

The new policy announcement is barely 24 hours old and social media's reaction is mixed. It remains to be seen whether there will be a reprise of on-location protests.
