The first quarter of the fiscal year means it's the perfect time to review your annual performance and determine if you are qualified for a raise.
Asking for a raise can be nerve-wracking. However, the process doesn't have to be intimidating.
Here are some tips on how to professionally ask for a raise, from determining your desired pay to having the conversation with your boss.
Research the average salary for your position within your industry and geographic area. Visit websites like Glassdoor, PayScale and LinkedIn Salary that provide valuable insights.
Make a list of your accomplishments and write out how they have contributed to the growth and success of the company.
Set a goal for yourself and decide on a specific salary or percentage increase that you're aiming for.
Timing is everything! Align your request with how your company is doing financially and its budget planning cycle.
Now you're ready! Schedule the meeting and rehearse. Make sure that you have a clear agenda and choose a formal setting for your conversation.
Have the conversation, stay calm and be prepared for questions. If the answer is no, ask for feedback on how you can earn a raise in the future.
Send an email thanking your boss for their time and reiterate any next steps discussed during the conversation. This shows professionalism and keeps an open line of communication.
Regardless of the outcome, remember that advocating for yourself is part of your career growth.
