Use These Tips To Find The Mentor You've Been Seeking

By Keely Aouga

At this point in your career journey, you might be in search of someone to guide you, yet unsure of how to approach the topic. Knowing how to ask someone to be your mentor is a vital skill.

These discussions can feel awkward, since influential people whose help you're seeking are typically in high demand and busy.

Before making your ask, be certain of why you desire to have a mentor. Most importantly, what would you like to receive from a mentorship?

Consider if your request for mentoring coincides with their availability and areas of interest before contacting them.

Create A Bond Before Asking

It's crucial to build a rapport with your possible mentor before you ask that big question. It could increase your chances of receiving a favorable answer.

Inquire if they are available for a meeting. You want to give them enough time to plan and assess their priorities.

If they have certain preferences, make sure you respect them. Be flexible to show you value their time.

Clearly explain what kind of counsel or advice you are looking for and why. This is where your initial brainstorming will come in handy.

You should let your potential mentor know that you're prepared to put in the time, effort and energy necessary to fully utilize their guidance.

Say Thank You

Regardless of their answer, express your gratitude for the time they spent with you despite their personal and professional commitments.

If they say yes, make a schedule with them, whether that's meeting bi-weekly or once a month.
