The next generation of comic writers are defining today’s comic book industry, and a new initiative is empowering the voices of Black and diverse creators to get readers to turn the page to more Black superheroes.

The Milestone Initiative Development Program was announced at DC FanDome as a new program from DC Comics, Milestone and WarnerMedia in collaboration with Ally, a digital financial services company, according to a press release provided to AfroTech.

The initiative is the inaugural program from DC’s Next Generation DC, which recruits and mentors young writers, illustrators and creatives from underserved communities across the world.

The Milestone Initiative aims to support and amplify the work of upcoming artists with the mission to fill the lack of Black talent within the comic book industry.

“From its earliest years, representation, impact and mentorship have always been at the heart of Milestone Media, and we’re proud and excited to with DC, WarnerMedia and Ally on Next Generation DC and The Milestone Initiative, cultivating the next great wave of diverse storytellers,” Milestone co-founder and iconic artist Denys Cowan said in a press release.

DC Comics fans that are selected for the program will be given the opportunity to further develop their storytelling through a one week in-person training seminar in DC’s Burbank, CA offices, and a 8-week virtual technical training course through Kubert School — which offers personalized education in cartooning and graphic art. Participants will also receive a grant through The Milestone Fund at the end of the summit.

“For many Black and diverse artists and writers, Milestone is part of their comic book DNA and we are thankful to partner with Ally to help these new voices be heard in addition to adding to Milestone’s legacy,” Daniel Cherry III, Senior Vice President and General Manager, DC said.
