Shannon Sharpe was raised in Glennville, GA, and had a successful college football career at HBCU Savannah State University (SSU), leading the team to an 8-1 record in 1989. According to SSU, his athletic prowess garnered him the single-season record for receiving yards, touchdowns, and yards per catch.

Sharpe would finish his collegiate career in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice and get drafted the same year in the seventh round to the Denver Broncos.
