SheaMoisture’s strong commitment to Black women and the community continues as they’ve announced a new advisory council comprised of well-known Black women activists to support the efforts of Black women leaders and social entrepreneurs.

According to a press release, the Social Justice Coalition — previously announced in June — was formed in the wake of the international unrest in response to recent police brutality incidents that resulted in the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and others.

Advisory Council members of the coalition — who were selected based on community recommendations — represent women in the community whose voices are needed in spaces like this.

Members of the council include Planned Parenthood President & CEO Alexis McGill Johnson, Until Freedom Co-Founder Tamika D. Mallory, Backstage Capital Founder & Managing Partner Arlan Hamilton, Professor and Author Ilyasah Shabazz, Wake Forest Professor Dr. Melissa Harris-Perry, University of Southern California Provost Professor Dr. Shaun Harper, and the NAACP’s Director of Youth and College Division Tiffany Dena Loftin.

“SheaMoisture has always been committed to supporting Black women entrepreneurs by developing meaningful relationships, substantive partnerships and programs with those in our community, in order to provide long-term solutions with sustainable impact,” said Sundial Brands CEO, Cara Sabin. “As we expand to amplify social justice advocacy as a cornerstone of the SheaMoisture brand, Black women must be at the helm of this most important work.”

The council will choose a handful of Black women community-activists to join and pair them with a member to receive mentorship throughout the Social Justice Coalition partnership.

Additionally, those community leaders will also advise the Sundial Brands leadership on the future direction of the Social Justice Coalition as well as the racial and social justice work the company has globally committed to.

Black women have maintained their position at the core of social movements and this newly-formed council is making it their mission to emphasize the importance of protecting and supporting us.

“Black women continue to lead movements advocating for justice and equity for their communities, however, the Black woman is not always as successful at garnering the same level of support for her own needs,” said Simone Jordan — Head of Community Commerce at SheaMoisture — in a statement. “The SJC aims to not just protect Black women and their families, but provides critical infrastructure, funding and support to amplify the work and impact she has in all of our communities.”

As part of its mentorship program, SheaMoisture is also launching a $100,000 investment fund and advocacy campaign dedicated to these leaders and entrepreneurs.

SheaMoisture’s latest initiative is committed to co-creating with its consumers and addressing their needs as the brand strives to provide more sufficient solutions.
