The only all-male Historically Black College and University (HBCU), Morehouse College , has its own initiative to assist current inmates in being prepared for life after incarceration. A part of the Andrew Young Center for Global Leadership (AYCGL), Morehouse College faculty members take aspects of its curriculum to Georgia-based inmates. Prison reform is built on the premise that individuals deserve a second chance. The concept of reform has led to lower rates of recidivism and more significant opportunities for people to have a greater chance of positive rehabilitation. According to a write-up by Morehouse associate professor Kipton E. Jensen, the AYGLC Prison Education Initiative was designed to support staff members who teach humanities courses to imprisoned men and women across the Georgia prison system. The prison education initiative is steadily growing at a solid pace, involving more Morehouse faculty and students to assist in prison education. As of last year, the AYGLC...

Thanks to Zillow, these Morehouse College students are cashing out and helping others at the same time! Zillow has officially announced the winners of its HBCU Housing Hackathon, where more than 150 students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) competed for top prizes. Each team of students was to bring innovative ideas to life that would help both at-risk renters and struggling first-time home buyers. The team from Morehouse, made up of four students, walked away with first place and a grand prize of $20,000 which will be split evenly amongst all four students. These Black startups are groundbreaking on their own — and they have the added benefit of being founded by HBCU graduates. Despite the lack of diversity within the tech industry, Black pioneers continue to set the industry on fire. Innovative approaches and insightful strategies provided by Black leaders in tech widen representation and opportunity for technological advancements. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have showcased great rapport for graduating Black students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). They play a great part in the success of Black leaders by providing support systems, opportunities, and resources for them to thrive. And recent studies reveal that HBCUs are incubators for thriving Black talent. A study conducted by Bloomberg (via TurningPoints ) reveals that Howard University produces the lion’s share of Black founders — which is why schools like Clark Atlanta, Morehouse, and Spelman are receiving $1.5 million in...

Robert F. Smith first came to everyone’s attention back in 2019, when he received his honorary doctorate from famed Historically Black College, Morehouse College. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Robert F. Smith (@robertfredericksmith) At that time, while he was receiving his doctorate, Smith announced that he’d be paying off the student loans for all who had them in his graduating class. Since then, Smith has launched an Historically Black College and University (HBCU) “alternative loans” initiative program, has had millions of dollars donated to his HBCU initiatives by some of the world’s leading companies, and became the richest Black man in America. Yet, all of these initiatives didn’t make a dent in Robert F. Smith’s net worth. According to Forbes, as of this writing, he has a net worth of $6.7 billion, and it’s only growing from here. “The most important thing you can do as a young person in [the Black] community is to become an expert,” Smith once said. [It’s key]...

Unfortunately, generational wealth isn’t readily available to Black Americans, but this founder is on a mission to change that. A. Donahue Baker is the co-founder and CEO of Money Avenue and is on a mission to help people create generational wealth through real estate acquisitions and entrepreneurial investment opportunities. When he isn’t leading change through his company, he is teaching entrepreneurship at Morehouse College or serving the community as a Certified Public Accountant. He defines generational wealth and highlights a key misconception most have when identifying wealth in that light during the latest episode of Black Tech Green Money with host Will Lucas. “One of the misconceptions is that generational wealth is simply making sacrifices in your own personal life that it will benefit the next generation,” said Baker. He also uses his own personal experience to highlight how generational wealth goes beyond just making those sacrifices. “I have a three-year-old son, his...
