On Aug. 17, Sony Music Publishing announced to extend Tyler Perry’s worldwide agreement with Tyler Perry Studios (TPS).

The Oscar and Emmy award-winner owns the largest production studio in the nation and made history as the first African American man to own a major production studio in 2019.

Sony Music Publishing’s Visual + Media division (previously known as Broadcast Media Rights) has worked alongside Tyler Perry Studios and music supervisor Joel C High for the last decade. The extension with Sony guarantees authorized music for over 60 productions, comprising 26 films, 20 plays, 1,5000 series episodes, and future projects, Market Insider previously reported.

Tyler Perry stated, “I’m very pleased to continue my creative partnership with Jon, Cathy, and the Sony Music Publishing team. I’m grateful for their support and passion for Tyler Perry Studios, and I look forward to future successes together.”

Perry’s current projects include “Sistas,” “The Oval,” “Ruthless,” and “Bruh.” Perry’s feature film and television programming airs on BET, BET +, Her, Netflix, and Amazon. Soon to be released on Showtime, Perry and Tim Palen are developing a drama series regarding the origin story of Madea called “Mabel.”

Tyler Perry’s journey began in the theatre where he wrote 13 plays including “I Can Do Bad All By Myself,” which introduced the treasured character Madea. AfroTech previously reported, in September of 2020, that Perry hit billionaire status earning $1.4 billion (pretax) since 2005, which is the year he transitioned to the big screen with box office hit “Diary of a Mad Black Woman.” Perry released 10 more Madea films and imprinted his legacy on cable television with the now syndicated shows “House of Payne” and “Meet The Browns.”

Sony’s recent extension will propel Perry’s creative pursuits forward as he continues to revolutionize the film and entertainment industry.
