GitHub CEO Says Nigeria's Developer Community Is 'World Class' And Growing Fast

On Github — a software development platform — people are able to share, discover, and build better software. The site also gives people the benefit of being able to collaborate with the 36 million developers who use it. That type of community is valuable, especially in coding, where it helps to have a second set of eyes on a project. Plus, Nigerians are taking full advantage of everything GitHub has to offer. GitHub’s CEO Nat Friedman told Business Insider that Nigeria is one of the fastest growing developer communities on GitHub and that growth has been consistent over the past two to three years. Friedman went on to add: “I’d say in terms of the talent here, what you see is a huge amount of potential and aptitude; incredibly smart people, motivated, persistent, and with a positive attitude. GitHub Launches New 'Sponsors' Tool To Help Support Open Source Developers

For creators online, it can be difficult to sustain themselves while still putting out good work. Now, some sites are making it easier to help out. Today, Github launched a new tool called Sponsors that will allow you to support open source developers through monthly recurring payments. “Funding developers through GitHub Sponsors is one more way to contribute to open source projects you appreciate,” GitHub wrote on its site. “Help developers get the resources they need, and recognize contributors working behind the scenes to make open source better for everyone.” Developers can opt to have a “Sponsor me” button on their Github repositories. In addition, open source projects can highlight their own funding models, whether that’s individual contributions or using other platforms. What is most unique about Github’s tool is that all the money will go directly to the developers. “GitHub will not charge fees for GitHub Sponsors. And to celebrate the launch, we’ll cover payment processing...

GitHub Announces Unlimited Free Private Repositories

GitHub just announced it will now offer users unlimited free private repositories, in the first major update since the service was acquired by Microsoft for $7.5 million in October. GitHub Free allows developers to use the platform for private projects with up to three collaborators. Previously, free accounts could only create public coding projects. “Many developers want to use private repos to apply for a job, work on a side project, or try something out in private before releasing it publicly. Starting today, those scenarios, and many more, are possible on GitHub at no cost,” the company said in the statement. The service also unveiled the launch of GitHub Enterprise, unifying GitHub Business Cloud and GitHub Enterprise (now known as Enterprise Cloud and Enterprise Server) for a “one per-seat” price. “Whether you’re a student about to write your first line of code, an enterprise leader with teams around the world, or an open source maintainer, we want GitHub to be the best place...
