A Look Into How Rickey Thompson & Denzel Dion's Social Media Evolution Has Kept Them Booked & Busy

Evolving with social media is no small feat, yet Rickey Thompson and Denzel Dion have made it look easy. The online world has watched the two influencers and best friends grow up from six-second Vines to becoming YouTubers — because before TikTok, YouTube was where a class of Black content creators entered the space and took the Internet by storm. And things were clearly just beginning, as Thompson and Dion seemingly went on to make even bigger moves in the entertainment industry. In my opinion, their success is marked as wins, especially when up against not being awarded the same level of opportunities as their white counterparts. However, t he two have stayed ten toes down in the game for nearly a decade — even though the way Black content creators get treated hasn’t really improved much. Take, for example, how Black TikTokers are the creative masterminds behind some of the biggest trends on the platform, but still, Forbes’ list of the highest TikTok earners featured no Black...

How to Kickstart Content Creation for Your New Business

Lots of people start a new business and think that solely promoting it is the key to success. But creating helpful, quality content also helps to drive sales and conversions. People want to trust a company before they make a purchase. If they don’t, they’re likely to move on to the next. That’s why over half of marketers create at least one piece of content each day. So here’s how to create content for your new business so that you can gain your customers’ trust. 1. UNDERSTAND YOUR MARKET’S NEEDS Before creating content for your product or service, it’s important to know what your potential customers want. What goals do they hope to achieve by using your product/service? What do they hope to gain by reading your content? For example, if you sell skincare products, your target audience would probably want to read articles about how to get clear skin or how to prevent wrinkles. This information would prove valuable to your audience. As a result, they’re more likely to purchase from...

Streaming Platform Twitch Lands in Hot Water With Creators Getting Mass DMCA Takedown Notices

Twitch’s music copyright infringement problem on its platform has brought on a lot of frustration from users lately. According to Polygon , the streaming platform recently informed its users that it has gone forth and deleted all content violating music copyright laws after receiving “a sudden influx of DMCA takedown requests” back in June. It is INSANE that @Twitch informs partners they deleted their content – and that there is more content in violation despite having NO identification system to find out what it is. Their solution to DMCA is for creators to delete their life's work. This is pure, gross negligence. pic.twitter.com/mhdXU5lEc5 — Devin (@DevinNash) October 20, 2020 📢 This week, we've had a sudden influx of DMCA takedown requests for clips with background music from 2017-19. If you’re unsure about rights to audio in past streams, we advise removing those clips. We know many of you have large archives, and we're working to make this easier. — Twitch Support...

Meet Sarah and Ray Smith, the Husband-Wife Founders of a Houston-Based Podcasting Service

After living in Houston, TX, for several months, I finally found a suitable workspace. Coffee shops — with their unreliable WiFi and unpredictable crowds – weren’t cutting it for me. So, I spent a week bouncing around coworking spaces in the city before picking a permanent home. Little did I know that in my new work home, I would discover one of the coolest startups in Houston, TX. The Houston Pod is a podcasting service operated by the husband-wife team, Sarah and Ray Smith. I convinced the pair to sit down with me for a few minutes and tell me their story. Who are Sarah and Ray Smith? Sarah and Ray were both born and raised in Rosenberg, TX, a small suburb of Houston. They attended rival high schools but met each other when they were 15-years-old. The Smiths went separate ways after high school but reconnected in their twenties. They discovered that they both had a passion for business, innovation, and communication. “For us, our journey has been very much about us learning about...

Patreon acquires Kit, creators can now include merch in subscriptions

Patreon helps content creators sell monthly content subscriptions to its fans. Currently, 2 million patrons are backing more than 100,000 of their favorite creators on the platform. Kit is a startup that launched with the idea to help people discover products worth getting while influencers are able to share their favorite products and earn revenue from the sales. With Patreon’s recent acquisition of Kit , monthly subscription packages will now be able to offer so much more in the way of merchandise, which will further encourage subscriptions at higher monthly tiers than before. With the acquisition, Kit, which has raised $2.5 million since it was founded, is able to continue its commitment to “connecting creators and fans and followers and to making it easier to reward creativity and expertise.” Patreon, which has a valuation of nearly $450 million, plans to build an open merchandise provider platform. Creators who are already using Kit will not lose their revenue streams during...
