Exclusive: Issa Rae Joins Forces With American Express To Champion Black-Owned Businesses

It’s no secret Issa Rae is rooting for everybody Black and things are no different this holiday season. Joining forces with American Express, Issa Rae will be curating the ByBlack Bazaar marketplace on Saturday, Dec. 11 in Downtown Los Angeles. “As a curator at the marketplace, in its simplest form it will be a great place to stop by and get a gift especially if you do not know what to get people because there will be a range of options,” Issa Rae shared exclusively with AfroTech. “It will also be a great way to establish community amongst business owners and allow owners to establish and forge relationships. You will see the family behind the business and you will see directly or hear about the history of these businesses. With online businesses, you don’t get the neighborhood store feel often. So, the Bazaar marketplace really excites me for that.”

These Black-Owned Brands Deserve Your #SmallBusinessSaturday Support

Recently, as AfroTech previously reported, American Express and the U.S. Black Chambers, Inc. (USBC) announced the expansion of ByBlack with the first national certification program exclusively for Black-ownership designation. And one of the most famous participants in the program is Issa Rae, who recently certified her Sienna Naturals through the program with the hopes of reaching more customers for her in-demand products. “We have only scratched the surface of the collective power of Black businesses, so I am excited to join AmEx and the USBC to shine a light on the opportunities ByBlack presents,” she said in a statement. “ByBlack is a powerful platform that connects Black business owners with new revenue streams and helps all of us find and shop at standout businesses. Together we can spread the word to support small Black businesses.” To qualify for the no-cost certification process, businesses must provide proof that their business is 51 percent Black-owned, and also...

How Black Founders Can Meet Their Moment: Enhancing E-commerce Strategies To Keep #BuyBlack Going And Growing

COVID-19 spurred a seismic shift in buying behavior and fast-tracked years of change in the way companies across all sectors and regions do business. U.S. Commerce Department data reveals that consumer spending through non-store channels grew more than 30% in November 2020 when compared to November 2019 — the second-highest rate of any month since the agency began publishing data in 1992. In parallel, U.S. retailers experienced a boost of $152 billion in e-commerce sales in 2020. As consumers overwhelmingly shifted their spending toward online channels during the pandemic, business owners had to pivot more quickly than they ever imagined. At the same time, Black business owners found themselves disproportionately affected by pandemic-linked business impacts. A recent study conducted by the JPMorgan Chase Institute found that Black-owned businesses often experience lower revenues, smaller profit margins and more limited access to cash. Between February and April 2020, more than...

These Twin Sisters Are Breaking Barriers in the Wine Industry One Bottle at A Time

Wine is more than just a drink for the Nichols sisters, it’s a lifestyle! Nichelle and Nicole Nichols are co-founders and SHE-eos behind The Guilty Grape, a wine brand that is committed to breaking barriers and showcasing representation. These are not just your average sisters, Nichelle and Nicole are identical twins who took their frustration of the lack of minority representation and turned it into wine! We sat down with them to discuss their why, their commitment to lifting and their climb, and their idea of longevity within the wine space through their brand. On The Guilty Grape Before they were running a wine business, both Nichelle and Nicole had similar paths, both working in corporate retail management and the entertainment industry. “We reached a point where we were coming home and we just weren’t passionate about what we were doing anymore,” said Nichelle. “It wasn’t making us happy.” They wanted a business in something that not only piqued their interest but something...

Meet the Founders Who Are Changing the Way People Buy Black

Every single day, more and more consumers are buying Black for many reasons — social justice, wealth-building within the Black community, and more. However, no matter the reasoning for purchasing from Black-owned businesses, Bold Xchange wants to simplify the “Buy Black” experience. Co-founded by Danielle Deavens and Doug Spencer, Bold Xchange is an online marketplace that features a curated collection of quality products from Black-owned brands. The e-store, which launched in 2018, offers home goods, apparel, and skincare, including Historic Noir Coffee, ElonWick candles, Golde superfoods , and most recently, masks by DIOP. The idea first came to Deavens and Spencer while shopping for Christmas gifts in 2016, and in 2018, they launched Bold Xchange. Though the marketplace allows consumers to buy products much like other online stores committed to the Buy Black movement, Xchange guarantees a three-day delivery. Its founders also promise on-camera unboxing reviews and thoughtful...
