Nearly four decades have passed since we lost legendary artist Bob Marley, but his legacy continues to live on.

This past Tuesday, to celebrate the end of Women’s History Month and Marley’s year-long 75th birthday commemoration, the Bob Marley Legacy Series, a 12-part mini-documentary, released episode two, “Women Rising.”

The empowering short series takes a look at women behind Marley’s acclaim and the political movements he helped spark during his time that still exists today. The mini-documentary features interviews from women like Judy Mowatt, Marcia Griffiths, and Rita Marley, Bob Marley’s wife.

As the founder of the Rita Marley Foundation, Mrs. Marley continues to reflect the work of her late husband with integrity and grace. Her foundation works to eradicate poverty and hunger while empowering communities in Ghana and Jamaica.

Other female musicians, academics, and activists who were also propelled by Marley’s work echoed their sentiments for the man whose song lyrics skillfully retold Black history.

Marley is well-known for his musical and political impact, and women, in particular, have found solace in his words.

“Every song of his is still relevant,” stated Marley’s granddaughter Mystic Marley. “Things that happen politically and things that happen in the social world and the real-life things and the spiritual things… All of his messages still stand.”

His messages of emancipation, fighting for civil rights, and rebelling oppressive systems maintain as parts of his women empowerment legacy. The documentary dives deep into how Marley’s movements helped British-Nigerian women’s rights activist Seyi Akiwowo find her voice. During the chaos and political turmoil, it was Marley’s influence that gave Akiwowo a sign of relief.

“Celebrating women and their strength feels more appropriate and crucial than ever,” shared Cedella Marley, Bob Marley’s daughter, in the documentary.

“To think he inspired and empowered so many women across the world is incredible. I hope his music continues to lift others, even during these difficult times the world currently finds itself in.”
