The former basketball athlete is accomplishing this as the founder of his own wine brand, Wade Cellars, established in 2014, and as a University of California (UC Davis), Davis board member. Florida woman Desiree Noisette founded her wine brand Mermosa four years ago, and today sheâs recognized for making history as the stateâs first-ever Black woman winemaker, Click Orlando reports. The starting guard for the Cleveland Cavaliers is said to be the first-ever NBA star wine apprentice, according to information shared with AFROTECHâą. Mitchell dove into the various aspects of winemaking with the help of The Prisoner, a Napa Valley-based wine brand that has worked closely with the NBA since 2020. The company also works with 100 growers in the northern region to produce various blends, according to their website. This push is in part due to Diverse Powered Brands, a B2B global digital catalog that helps buyers connect with diverse suppliers and brands, according to its website. These efforts have led to victories for new business owners. According to a news release, 13 suppliers took part in a pitch competition, moderated by Diverse Powered Brands, in June 2023 at Target headquarters in Minneapolis, MN. Suppliers were able to pitch to Targetâs wine team while founders interacted with executives from Women of the Vine & Spirits, Diverse Powered Brands and Johnson Brothers, Southern Glazerâs Wine & Spirits, and Republic National Distributing Co. This Black-owned wine shop is making its way to Oaklandâs Black Arts Movement District. CoCo Noir Wine Shop & Bar was co-founded by Bay area natives Mari Kemp and Alicia Kidd and will open during the first quarter of 2021 with a focus on BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) along with women-owned brands made around the country.
