Intelligence, drive, and ambition seems to run in this family as the father, son and daughter have earned their master’s degree. Commondre Cole alongside his son, Ja’Coby Cole, and his daughter, Iesha Gully were among the graduating class at Mississippi State University. They all earned master’s degrees in education, WXXV25 reports. “This is a big accomplishment for our family,” said in an interview. “Just to keep driving and keep going forward and to lead by example and to show my younger siblings and the rest of my family that we can do it. We started strong, and we finish strong.” When the family achieves success together, the opportunities are endless. With the latest accomplishment, they are now joining the world of educators that are making the world a better place one child at a time.
A Hip-Hop legend has been secretly living a double life. Cozomo de’ Medici — a non-fungible (NFT) Twitter platform — has rose to popularity collecting fans and conjuring a crypto collection boasting 175 tokens valuing millions of dollars since its debut in August of last year, Tech Times reports. On Monday, Snoop Dogg shocked Twitter users when he revealed he’s actually the face behind Cozomo de’ Medici. Of course, this sent Twitter users into a frenzy. “Dear frens,” a tweet read via the Cozomo de’ Medici profile. “ Since I announced my dox, events have transpired most would not believe, nor understand. What I can share is I’ve received an outpouring of kindness here on twitter. And many say they prefer to know me as Cozomo, and no one else! So here is what I’ve decided to do: Shortly, as promised, I will dox from my personal account. As my fame is considerable, the tweet will no doubt be discovered. Those who are curious to my identity will soon know it.” Dear frens, Since I...
The Jamaican bobsled team would love to continue its “cool runnings” into the winter Olympics. In a press release announcement, it was revealed that one of the world’s most famous bobsled teams would love to go to the winter Olympics, and they need to raise money to do so. But this time around, they’re not going to be doing exhibitions or heart-warming Disney movies. Rather, they’re raising money with non-fungible tokens (NFTs). “ The NFT Drop will feature limited edition digital artwork which highlights the best of the Jamaican Bobsled Team brand: daring, courageousness, persistence, and claiming your place on Earth regardless of where you are,” read a statement in the press release. “ The NFT Drop initiative is the first of its kind, mixing in a range of authentic Jamaican digital and physical experiences from musicians, music, and art lovers along with a purpose-driven mission of securing the celebrated team a spot in the 2022 Olympics utilizing unique digital assets.” According...
Benny the Butcher is the latest rapper to enter into the quickly-growing world of non-funglible tokens (NFTs). In a press release announcement, it was revealed that the Hip-Hop “Legend” dropped his first-ever NFT collection on UREEQA Marketplace. The collection, which is available for potential purchase via an online auction, will also feature an opportunity for the winner to personally connect with the Buffalo, NY native. “This NFT collection is a chance to give back to the fans that have helped me pave my way as a rapper and artist,” said Benny the Butcher, in the press release statement. “I wanted to do something that would be exclusive to my core fans and connect with them in a way that hasn’t been possible until now.” The NFT drop consists of all track utility videos from the “Plugs I Met” EP with Benny talking about each song; a personalized autographed “Plugs I Met” CD (digipack); the opportunity to watch Benny in concert via Zoom feed on the “Burden of the Plugs Tour,” along...
Ted Lucas will always have Peanut Butter Jelly Time. In an interview with Complex, the Slip-N-Slide Records founder revealed that he created an non-fungible token (NFT) of the iconic meme that was one of the first-of-its-kind on the Internet. “That dancing banana has been one of those memes that’s been catchy for years and we just thought about it,” he said to the outlet. “Now we put our heads together as a team. I think one of the [Peanut Butter Jelly Time meme] videos got over 300 million views, it’s crazy. Just a dancing banana and people reading the lyrics to the song. I can say, over the pandemic.” Ted Lucas was responsible for launching the careers of hundreds of rappers in Slip-N-Slide’s prime — the label gave its start to the likes of Trina, Plies, Trick Daddy, and F$O Dinero — and his investment in NFTs was, he said, another way of creating an income for the label. He also said that it was a risky proposition, and he “had his grandmother praying” that it would prove to be...

Of all the buzzwords and concepts in the tech sector today, cryptocurrency is perhaps the most misunderstood. Although many people can’t tell the difference between digital currency and cryptocurrency (in a nutshell: all crypto is digital currency, but not all digital currency is crypto), even more people have huge misconceptions about cryptocurrency (no, it will not destabilize the American dollar — Wall Street’s habit of playing blackjack with our retirement funds is doing a great job of that on their own). And, of course not a day goes by when we’re not inundated with Direct Messages from Insta-scammers who swear we can get rich off of crypto if we just give them money (all while they’re conflating Forex and crypto, which is nothing if not hilarious). Fetty Wap, however, doesn’t have any of those problems. “Thankfully, my brother filled me in on the world of cryptocurrency,” he told AfroTech. “I had a lot of questions — like everyone, really — but fortunately, he was educated...
Hip-Hop is diving headfirst into the non-fungible token (NFT) space with its very own collection to honor 47 years of the culture. On June 19, the Universal Hip Hop Museum in the Bronx — in partnership with blockchain platform NEAR Protocol and celebrated illustrator André LeRoy Davis — debuted a special collection of NFTs in which Hip-Hop fans are now able to own a piece of the genre’s history, a press release states. The goal of the new collection is to both honor years of Hip-Hop’s rich music culture that has given artists a space to be creative and also champion ownership of their intellectual property through cutting-edge decentralized blockchain and NFT technologies. “NFTs bring a unique opportunity to honor Hip Hop icons as well as offer artists more control of their creations” Peter DePaulo — head of NEAR’s product lab, Satori — said in a statement. “Our goal is to offer a familiar, smooth onboarding and purchasing experience unlike what’s required at NFT marketplaces built...
Now that Juneteenth is officially a federal holiday, companies are getting in on the wave. Whether this is a good or a bad thing remains to be seen, but one of the first companies to honor the newly minted holiday has stepped up to the plate. In a press release announcement, it was revealed that Jadu, a leading mobile augmented reality platform known for creating hyper-realistic holographic performances of musicians such as Lil Nas X, announced the release of a collection of NFT holograms themed around Black artists performing some of this decade’s most impactful dances. Jalaiah Harmon, who created the “Renegade” dance that garnered more than 5 billion views on TikTok, is the first to be immortalized in honor of Juneteenth. Harmon, who first became famous when Charli D’Amelio ripped off the “Renegade” and claimed it as her own, was revealed to be the creator of the dance by Taylor Lorenz of The New York Times. Michelle Obama also tweeted out support for the teenager after the...
Dr. Dre and his longtime collaborator, Jimmy Iovine, have announced that they’ve teamed up yet again. But this time, their collaboration isn’t a musical one (well, not exactly, anyway). According to the Los Angeles Times, who was the first to break the story, the rapper-turned-mogul and the music industry veteran will be launching a new public school in South Central Los Angeles. The school, which is scheduled to open in the fall of 2022, will be focused on the entrepreneurial spirit that propelled both these men to success from the 1980s on. “[I want to reach] the inner-city kid, the younger me,” Dr. Dre said to the Los Angeles Times. “Here’s a place that you can go where there’s something that you can learn that you’re really interested in.” The Los Angeles County Board of Education approved the plans for the school, and Iovine was very specific about providing the prospective students an opportunity to work for some of the coolest companies in the world. What’s more, he said,...
The hype surrounding non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and smart contracts presents Black Tech Street the perfect opportunity to unveil their latest campaign. The national initiative — which launched on the Tulsa Race Massacre anniversary last month — is now launching the first-ever regenerative fundraising campaign to build a brand new tech hub for Black entrepreneurs in Tulsa, OK, a press release reports. As part of its commitment to facilitate a $1 billion investment in the Black Tulsa Economy, Black Tech Street hopes this campaign will inspire social impact giving from today’s most impactful innovators and investors. “We are minting a one-of-a-kind Centennial Coin NFT to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Greenwood Massacre and to raise funds to secure the next 100 years of innovation and success for Black entrepreneurs,” Black Tech Street founder Tyrance Billingsley II said in a statement. In partnership with SecondMuse and Blockchange, the new tech hub will represent what was...
Rick Ross is the latest hip-hop star to make a splash in the cryptocurrency market with his history-making debut. According to a report from Forbes, the music mogul — alongside producer duo Cool & Dre — has teamed up with luxury car designer Rich B. Caliente to create the first-ever Porsche 911 art car and an NFT. “This NFT is super fly. Just splashing paint with the can as art is a combination of the culture with the lifestyle while trying fly things while being creative,” Rick Ross said in an email to the outlet. “The synergy and energy that we had while we were doing this… it was like a one-off,” Caliente added. “It’s all our relationships combined and all our passions combined to create something and put it into one tangible asset.” The creative cryptocurrency collaboration was launched with help from NFT management consultancy company, Slashdot. Unlike most NFTs that just come with a digital asset, Forbes reports that the auction of the Porsche includes ownership of the art and...
For the country at large, it may seem as though it wasn’t until last summer that prioritizing support for Black-owned businesses became a popular trend. However, that is hardly the case for this Houston-based marketplace. BLCK Market was founded back in 2017 with a mission to provide a safe space for small Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs to showcase their quality brands and curate a vision of financial literacy, support, and creativity for the local community. The marketplace, considered Houston’s largest gathering of Black-owned businesses, started out holding in-person events in some of Houston’s Black museums like the Houston Museum of African-American Culture and then moved onto the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum. According to founder Jeremy Malone (who also goes by J.O.), he created this powerful concept to find a positive outlet for his creativity and also give back to his city in a way that makes a statement for all Black businesses. “Being a creative in Houston is...
