Wage Questions Arise After Uber Eats Driver Is Brought To Tears Over $1.19 Tip

Uber Eats has had a problematic history with how it treats its drivers, but a recent viral video demonstrates how many issues their behavior really raises. Uber Eats driver Smithson Michael, as he’s been identified from his TikTok account, recently went viral after he posted a video of himself crying after receiving a measly $1.19 tip. This tip was received after driving to a client for over an hour. After receiving $1.19 in a tip, and $2 from the app, Michael netted a little more than $3 for over an hour’s worth of work. (The federal minimum wage, as of this writing, for covered nonexempt employees is $7.25 per hour. Many states also have minimum wage laws — in New York, for example, the minimum wage starts at $12 per hour, and a $15 minimum — already in place in New York City and its five boroughs — is expected to be enacted statewide by October 2021.) However, Uber Eats drivers are considered self-employed contractors for the company, not actual Uber Eats employees. “I got a...

Ubers Drivers In The UK Are Planning To Protest Ahead of The Company's IPO

Next week, Uber has plans to finally go public, allowing anyone to buy stock in the company. Although Uber lost $1.8 billion in 2018 , the company still has a target valuation of between $80 and $90 billion, according to the Wall Street Journal. That may have the potential to make some former and current employees rich, but drivers will most likely lose out. In response, United States drivers planned a 24-hour protest on May 8 ahead of Uber’s IPO in Boston, Chicago, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, San Diego, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. Now, drivers in the United Kingdom plan to join in. Uber drivers organized by the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (IWGB ) in London, Birmingham, Nottingham, and Glasgow all plan to log off the app and demonstrate outside of Uber offices in each city. In a statement, the IWGB wrote: “With an expected valuation of $100 billion, Uber’s founder, venture capitalists and management will become fabulously wealthy overnight. Uber’s founder...

Some Uber Drivers Could Get Stock Options Ahead Of The Company's IPO

Ride-sharing giant, Uber is letting drivers get stock options in preparation of the company’s IPO, TechCrunch reports. Driver’s who have logged 2,500, 5,000, 10,000 or 20,000 rides will receive $100, $500, $1,000 or $10,000 in common stock. Uber is also set to give drivers who have completed less rides smaller cash bonuses. Uber’s program has been in the works since 2016, but struggled to come to fruition because of security hurdles that stops non-full time employees from holding private stock in a company. Uber’s biggest competitor, Lyft announced in March that it was also launching a program to compensate drivers with stock. Uber and Lyft have extended other consumer offerings and other rewards programs for riders in an effort to gain new customers and retain old ones. Discounts on Lyft and Uber have become more common, especially as other ride-share companies like Via and Maven have entered the space. Last month Uber announced its rewards program that lets customers earn points...

NYC Votes for Uber and Lyft Drivers To Get Minimum Wage

New York City’s Taxi and Limousine Commission just voted to set a minimum wage for app-based drivers working for companies like Uber and Lyft. The new policy requires drivers to make $17.22 per hour— $15 minimum wage, plus paid time off —which could result in a pay raise of over $9,000 annually. The historic decision comes from a TLC study revealing most drivers currently take home roughly $11.90 per hour after expenses. Drivers are legally independent contractors and therefore are not protected under minimum-wage laws. The new rule is set to go in effect in 20 days. Economists developed a formula that would factor in trip mileage and time plus the percentage of time drivers have customers. Labor non-profit Independent Drivers Guild has been organizing to increase pay for app-based drivers for the past two years. “Today we brought desperately needed relief to 80,000 working families. All workers deserve the protection of a fair, livable wage and we are proud to be setting the new...
