Twitter is Testing New Pop Up Profiles to Improve Threads

Twitter is currently set up so clicking someone’s handle brings you directly to their profile. This can be frustrating if you’re deep in a thread because it pulls you out of what you’re reading.  In an effort to make conversations easier to follow, Twitter is testing new pop up profiles to improve threads . Anyone involved on Black Twitter knows threads are important. Twitter threads are what allows people to tell iconic stories, share resources, or just form a single cohesive thought. On Tuesday, Twitter announced a new feature that can improve threads , stating, “We’re testing an easier way to check out profiles on iOS without leaving your timeline! Simply tap any @ handle in a Tweet, take a peek, follow, and get right back to it.” The new feature creates mini “pop up” profiles that you can click on to see, instead of being taken to a user’s entire page. With the new feature, you’ll be able to see someone’s full bio, follower counts, and even when they joined Twitter. There will...

How Consumer Responsibility Shapes The Fashion Industry

The fashion industry is a massive global market that relies on consumer demand to shape trends and production. Every purchase a consumer makes influences how fashion brands operate, from luxury houses like Dior to fast fashion retailers like SHEIN . Consumer responsibility plays a major role in the ethical, environmental and labor aspects of the fashion industry. Trends change quickly, and consumers are always looking for the next big style. Social media and celebrity culture drive these shifts, making people want to buy new clothes frequently. For fast fashion this means the priority is to create low-cost, trendy clothing at a rapid pace. Companies like Zara, H&M and Forever 21 design and produce new styles in just weeks, while SHEIN keeps a stable of designers on hand to release new looks daily. This ensures that customers always have something new to buy . However, this system comes with significant consequences. The Environmental Impact Of Fast Fashion (Fernand De...

Meta Discontinues DEI Programs Just Days After The Company's CEO Announces The End Of Its Fact-Checking System

Meta has joined the ranks of major companies that are scaling back or, in its case, terminating diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. In a memo sent on Friday, Jan. 10, through Meta’s internal communications tool Workplace, Janelle Gale, the company’s vice president of human resources, announced updates to “our hiring, development, and procurement practices,” effective immediately, according to Axios. “The legal and policy landscape surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the United States is changing,” Gale wrote in the memo. “The Supreme Court of the United States has recently made decisions signaling a shift in how courts will approach DEI. … The term ‘DEI’ has also become charged, in part because it is understood by some as a practice that suggests preferential treatment of some groups over others.” Going forward, Meta will no longer have a dedicated DEI team. Maxine Williams, the company’s standing chief diversity officer, will transition to a new...

Bryce James was voraciously pursued by several appealing Pac-12 schools over the last few weeks, with the Tucson-based school apparently offering the most compelling welcome package. The rising star’s choice was commended with comments from numerous NBA legends, including Kevin Durant, Jamal Crawford, Rachel Nichols and of course, LeBron himself. Choosing The Best Hashtags For Business Networking

The evolution of business-to-business (B2B) advertising has changed over the decades. Previously, businesses would spread the word about their services by sharing business cards, postcards, mail brochures, newspaper classified ads, online classifieds, full-color magazine ads and pay for booths at in-person company conventions. But with the founding of Twitter by Jack Dorsey , Noah Glass, Biz Stone and Evan Williams came the introduction of a new way for companies to network via digital marketing . It’s largely credited to a product designer named Chris Messina in Silicon Valley. His idea? Hashtags. Why Were Hashtags First Used? Messina observed how Internet chat rooms were using the pound (#) symbol and thought it would be useful for a “group organizing framework.” Although his 2007 idea was originally dismissed as “nerdy” and others were convinced it wouldn’t catch on, clearly Messina was right in the long run. By 2009, Twitter was using hashtags. In 2012, hashtags became popularly...

What Happened To Reddit Stock? Explaining The Sudden Meteoric Rise Of RDDT Trading

Wall Street day traders found themselves shocked and confused last week when Reddit’s stock price climbed to heights of 58 percent, surpassing the expectations of even the most liberal investors on r/WallStreetBets. The social media site , which is primarily used for sharing opinions, discussing niche topics and delivering daily news to millions of user-generated in-groups, reported $348.4 million in Q3 revenue according to data on Yahoo Finance . While these sky-high figures would be a bit surprising to most financial analysts, they were especially shocking to Wall Street insiders , who were reportedly planning to short the RDDT stock based on their expectation that the site would lose money during the most recent earnings report . In order to understand why and how the Reddit stock was able to surpass expectations, we’ll have to take a brief look at what’s changed in the site’s business model in recent months, watch similar stocks such as META and NVDA, and study the industry...

Head Of Instagram Adam Mosseri Shares What Could Be Impacting Your Instagram Content's Performance

Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri explains why some content on the platform is being suppressed. In response to a user who inquired if the quality of their Stories was being compressed over time since it appeared blurry in Instagram’s highlight feature, Mosseri reveals there is truth to that statement. He also adds that the quality of a video, Reel, or photo could also be impacted depending on a couple factors, including its performance. “In general, we want to show the highest-quality video we can when someone is watching a Story or a Reel or a photo. If something isn’t watched for a long time, ’cause the vast majority of views are in the beginning, we will move to a lower-quality video and then if it’s watched again a lot, then we will re-render the higher-quality video,” Mosseri explained in an Instagram video, according to The Verge. “We also, if we are serving a video to someone on a slow internet connection, we’ll serve a lower-quality video, so that it will load quickly as...

Black History Month is a significant time to celebrate the accomplishments of influential Black people and emerging changemakers. Jefferson, the Minnesota Vikings wide receiver, has not only broken records but also set a new standard in the NFL. According to ESPN, he recently signed a four-year, $140 million contract extension, with $110 million guaranteed. This deal not only makes him the highest-paid wide receiver ever but also the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. Meet Thomas Jennings, The Inventor Of Dry-Cleaning And First Black U.S. Citizen To Secure A Patent

Thomas L. Jennings is the first Black individual to be granted a patent in the United States, according to the National Geographic. Jennings, born in 1791 to a freed family in New York City, NY, would become an entrepreneur, owning his own tailoring business, per Lemelson–MIT. He had worked various jobs before settling on being a tailor, and his popularity grew within his community, allowing him to open a storefront, Black Inventor reports. However, Jennings’ customers, seemingly satisfied with his service, addressed concerns about cleaning the fabric he used. This led him to experiment to create solutions and cleaning agents, and he developed the “dry-scouring” method, which lifts stains and dirt from fabrics through solvents without the worries of shrinkage or comprising the fabric, per GreenEarth Cleaning. Today, the technique is more commonly known as dry-cleaning. Black Inventor noted that Jennings applied to patent the method in 1820. At this time, to adhere to the Patent Act...

Some Black Women Prefer To Work From Home To Escape Racism And We Don't Blame Them

Working from home provides a certain freedom and flexibility that office life will never match, and Black women are taking advantage of that. Whether that freedom looks like working in your pajamas, taking extra breaks, binging Netflix shows during meetings, indulging in midday workouts, or for some Black women, escaping workplace racism, working from home brings various senses of comfort that some aren’t willing to give up easily now. Insider published a story detailing how Black women feel about working from home and how it gives them “more agency over their lives.” While the pandemic forced many companies across the nation to adopt work from home models, it also forced them to question their workplace culture, even while their teams weren’t congregating in person. In June 2020, an Essence Magazine study reported that 45 percent of Black women said they often experienced racism while at work. Slack backed that in its recent Future Forum survey which found that more Black employees...
