Viral sensation Tariq is now more than just the “Corn Kid.” As AfroTech previously told you, Tariq stole the hearts of millions during an interview with Recess Therapy, where he displayed his unmistakable love for corn. Since then, Tariq has remained busy scoring a partnership with Chipotle and most recently a warm welcome from the state of South Dakota.
Mikal Bridges’ life and legacy with the NBA can only be described in one word: consistency. The 27-year-old ball player has never missed a single game in his six seasons with the league, brought multiple teams to the playoffs , and has even claimed to have eaten the same Chipotle meal every single day for over a decade. While it’s hard to believe the young small forward can maintain such a stringent day-to-day discipline, he’s been making waves over the years with his on-the-court performance and easy-going demeanor. If you’ve been following NBA news in recent weeks, you’re likely familiar with the ultra-reliable player, as he recently secured himself a position on the New York Knicks with a high-profile trade. Fans of 50 Cent’s “Power” franchise may have been first introduced to Michael Rainey Jr. in 2014 for his breakout role as Tariq James St. Patrick, but his acting days started years before. In an interview with Forbes’ “New Money” podcast, the actor recalled landing his first movie, “Un Altro Mondo (Another World),” at age 9 in 2010. Before the starring role, Rainey’s acting journey began when a talent agent approached his mom to consider placing him in the business. “She literally just walked up to my mom and said, ‘Your son has a great face for acting or modeling. Does he do any of that?’” Rainey told host Rosemarie Miller. “And she was like, ‘No.’ And then, like a week after, they had a meeting in the office and after that, they just started getting me auditions.” The auditions that rolled in included TV time for shows like “Sesame Street” and more. The progression of Rainey’s gigs led to landing his bigger role on “Power.” However, prior to the hit Starz show, he says that his...

My first time attending AfroTech was an amazing experience. I got to connect with so many people from all walks of life (I even made some friends from Canada!). My goal for attending was really to expand my network and experience an environment where I wasn’t the only Latino/Black in tech. Day 1 JFK -> SFO 6 hours. Real Intimate Setting; Jackie Bavaro on the right. The first event I attended was the Product Manager Chat with Jackie Bavaro, co-author of “Cracking the PM Interview” (FYI: she has another book on the way called “Cracking the PM Career”) hosted by my now good friend, Olumide Longe . As someone interested in becoming a product manager, I thought it should be a priority this weekend that I push my narrative and promote myself as someone in that space. We traversed many topics from the road to PM to how to handle interviews, what makes a good PM, KPIs, etc. After the session, I got to ask an extra question to Bavaro which was: “How do you balance the relationship between...
Monica Poindexter will be Lyft’s newest Diversity and Inclusion Officer as the ride-sharing giant heads toward an IPO, according to TechCrunch. “The tech industry moves extremely fast, which can sometimes lead to the sacrifice of establishing a core foundation, or launching something without the proper infrastructure,” Poindexter said. “I am a firm believer that this approach does not work with advancing diversity efforts.” Poindexter will be leading all of Lyft’s diversity efforts. Hopefully, she can improve some of the company’s dismal numbers from its most recent report which showed that Black people make up a little more than 10 percent of the company’s workforce, while whites make up 52.4 percent. The report also showed that 40 percent of Lyft employees are women, with 32.8 percent being in leadership positions. Lyft improved 3 percentage points in the number of female tech team members and 4 percentage points in Black or African American team members over the course of a year....
