Black Culture, Green Thumb: 7 Black Environmental Changemakers Using Their Platform To Promote Sustainability

1970 was pivotal in America’s relationship with sustainability and earth preservation. Earth Day was created on April 22, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was established on Dec. 2, 1970. Since this time, pervasive movements have centered around how people can intentionally preserve the planet by reducing trash, reusing materials, and recycling products to be repurposed. But if you were to talk to many members of the Black community, these practices have been a staple in Black households for decades. While sustainability is making waves through the popular halls of society, the concept is not new for those deeply associated with Black culture. From the reuse of everyday items to the current display of being plant parents, Black people from across the diaspora have been tapping into innovative and natural ways to keep the world “green” before it was ever an official thing. Plant enthusiast and Memphis, TN, resident Eso Tolson reflected on many green moments he...

In an effort to make changes on HBCU campuses across the country, the HBCU Community Development Action Coalition (HBCU-CDAC) — a nonprofit HBCU advocacy group — founded a Clean Energy Initiative to implement sustainable solutions for historically Black colleges in America. Urban Energy Garden Founder Wants to Bring Sustainability To At-Risk Communities

As sustainability and its technologies evolve, some urban communities are getting left behind. Urban Energy Garden, a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit, is giving college students the opportunity to bring sustainability to communities. Urban Energy Garden launched in 2017 after its founder and president Taylor Weaver finished a research project with his Georgetown Law School professor. “A lot of people at the margins of the poverty line or who are right below it don’t have the same access to sustainable resources that other communities do,” Weaver said. Weaver’s research showed that black and Latino populations are disproportionately affected by pollution because their communities are not regulated, which can lead to community health issues like asthma and lung cancer. He also found that there was a very low minority representation in regulatory sectors and wanted to change that. Urban Energy Gardens is combatting this trend by providing internships and scholarships for college...

How CoreWeave Is Leading The Way In Building The Future Of AI

If the bevy of look-alike summer event flyers flooding our timelines are any indication, we are fully in the AI era, and we won’t be turning back. While it seems like we’re just scratching the surface of end user applications of GenAI, companies are looking to adapt their businesses to incorporate GenAI. However, many are not quite sure how to do so in a way that is sustainable, both from a business perspective and in terms of environmental impact. Enter CoreWeave, where they are actively customizing AI innovation for a variety of clients to develop cloud infrastructure intentionally created with AI in mind. CoreWeave’s approach to creating a modern infrastructure stands out from that of other companies in this space in that they directly address the fact that so much compute capacity (up to 65%) is lost due to system inefficiencies once embedded in GPUs. With that and other factors in mind, the company built out data centers around GPU clusters powered by NVIDIA along with powerful...
