Washington Nationals Minority Owner Paxton Baker Breaks Down How Tech Is Reshaping Baseball

There are clubs that no amount of charm or charisma can get you into. The kind where wealth isn’t enough if it isn’t old, where opportunity depends not on merit but on access, and where the real decisions are made behind velvet ropes and closed boardroom doors. For far too long, the world of professional sports ownership has been one of those clubs. This is where Jaia Thomas and Diverse Representation enter the chat. What started as a digital directory for Black agents and publicists has evolved into a movement to radically shift the face of power in sports and entertainment. Through events like the recent Black Ownership in Sports Symposium in Atlanta, GA, Founder and CEO Thomas is not just asking for a seat at the table. She’s building new tables altogether. The symposium brings together current and aspiring Black owners, investors, and leaders to discuss tangible pathways into one of the most exclusive spaces in business. Paxton Baker was one of the speakers at this year’s...

A Timeline Of Jay-Z's 40/40 Club And Why He Plans To Continue Investing In The Venture By Reopening It In 2025

The year was 2003, and Jay-Z’s iconic “Black Album” would be released on Nov. 14. According to the Grammy Awards website, the album would also be his sixth-straight No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 and was initially signaled to be his retirement project. All of this was riding on the moment of an earlier debut that summer, with the launch of Sean Carter’s 40/40 Club. A New Type Of Night Club Situated in New York, NY’s Flat Iron district, the 40/40 Club was created as a luxury sports bar that doubles as a nightclub. Based on a report from Rolling Stone, the name pays homage to a rare achievement in baseball: hitting 40 home runs and stealing 40 bases in a single season. The nightlife concept saw success. Two years after opening, additional locations opened in Atlantic City, NJ; Las Vegas, NV; Atlanta, GA’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, and Brooklyn, NY’s Barclays Center. “I love sports,” Jay-Z said via Flatiron Nomad. “[I] wanted to create an environment that is conducive...

First Black-Owned Private Rocket Company Emerges To Create More Opportunities For Inclusion In Space Exploration

Founder Mateus Chipa wants the Black community to be more involved in space exploration. According to a Scripps News report of the 360 astronauts enlisted with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), just 18 had been Black astronauts as of Feb 5, 2024. For Chipa, he believed that to increase representation and empowerment it would be necessary for an influential Black entrepreneur to launch a company to break down barriers. According to his website, he waited eight years for Black leaders to step forward. In frustration after that time had passed, he decided to take matters into his own hands and established Theby Space Services (TSS) , a Black-owned private rocket company. “TSS came in a place of a lot of frustration, a lot of accountability and responsibility…For the last 10 years, I’ve been frustrated because I haven’t seen any Black nation or individual talking about going in a space,” Chipa said in a video shared on YouTube. “I’ve been asking myself why? Why...

Rap Snacks Sued By Mattel For Violating Its Trademark Rights With Nicki Minaj's 'Barbie-Que' Chips

Nicki Minaj has become known for having a ride-or-die fanbase, “the Barbies” — also known as “the Barbz.” To honor her loyal supporters, Rap Snacks partnered with the Harajuku Barbie in June for her own edition of Rap Snacks, The Barbie-Que Honey Truffle Potato Chips, as previously reported by AfroTech. “Nicki Minaj is unquestionably one of the most disruptive forces in the history of rap. You’re talking about a woman who rewrote the rules of hip hop culture and happens to be a phenomenal entrepreneur, as well,” Rap Snacks CEO James Lindsay said in a release at the time of the launch, according to PEOPLE. “It just makes sense that as a brand disrupting the snack industry, we align to push the bar even further. This is the beginning of a legendary partnership.” But it appears that what started as “legendary” has turned into a legal battle.

Jack Harlow Says He 'Lost A Lot Of Money' During Kentucky Derby — 'I Just Told Drake I Would Bet What He Bet'

Jack Harlow tried to keep up with Drake and his betting at the Kentucky Derby — and it didn’t work out so well for him. HipHopDX reported that the two rappers — who collaborated on Harlow’s sophomore album on a song called, interestingly, “Churchill Downs” — went to the famous horse race earlier this month. And Harlow, being who he is, decided he’d try to keep up with the 6 God and his various bets. Unfortunately, however, Harlow found out — the hard way — that Champagne Papi is in a class all by himself. “I did, I lost a lot of money,” Harlow said. “I just told Drake I would bet what he bet, so I copied him.”   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Jack Harlow (@jackharlow) Despite losing his proverbial shirt, it seemed like Harlow had a good time at the horse race while hanging out with one of the smoothest rappers in the game. He even credited Drake as being one of his Hip-Hop idols growing up. “Drake is one of the people who literally taught me how to rap; him, Wayne,...

FanDuel Among Approved Nine Mobile Sports Operators In New York — Jay-Z-Backed Fanatics Out

Jay-Z may no longer be in a New York state of mind. As AfroTech previously reported, the billionaire business mogul made a move to open a New York sportsbook in partnership with sports e-retailer Fanatics, making a bid with the New York State Gaming Commission back in August 2021. Now, according to 1010 WINS, the state’s gambling commission has approved nine mobile sports betting operators for the state, but neither Jay-Z-backed Fanatics nor Barstool Sports’ Penn Sports Interactive was recommended for a vote by the state. Thomas DiNapoli, the State’s comptroller, said that he estimates mobile sports gambling could bring in an excess of $500 million by 2025 to the state. But, it should be noted, the nine companies that were approved — including DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetMGM — have agreed to pay a tax rate of 51 percent to the state of New York to operate their companies in the state. So, perhaps this can be considered a “blessing in disguise” of sorts. Casinos and mobile companies...
