Calaxy Launches $1M Fund For Creators To Develop 'An Independent CEO Mindset' In Web3 Space

Calaxy wants creators to become more independent. As AFROTECH™ previously reported, Calaxy is the brainchild of tech entrepreneur Solo Ceesay and NBA star Spencer Dinwiddie. It serves as a social marketplace where users can create more meaningful experiences to engage their fans. With the added benefit of direct-to-consumer monetization, Calaxy eliminates the need to rely solely on brand and advertising deals. In 2022, Calaxy raised $26 million in a funding round led by The HBAR Foundation and Animoca Brands, with participation from Polygon. A portion of the funding was dedicated to expanding into the Web3 space. Calaxy has since developed “Worlds, ” allowing creators on the decentralized social marketplace to customize no-code apps. These apps enable creators to set up shops to sell subscriptions and digital experiences directly to fans and customers, otherwise known as the “population.” Additionally, creators can access wallets that store cryptocurrencies and NFTs, according to...

Op-Ed: Why Showing Up Is Just As Difficult As Raising Capital For Black Founders

Solo Ceesay is the CEO & Co-Founder of Calaxy. — Since I was a boy, I wanted to be a successful businessman. I vividly remember trying on my father’s oversized pastel suits, donning the ubiquitous business look of any dapper-dressed African man of the ’90s. Even before I could form full sentences, I was primed and driven to work in business. With motivation and determination aplenty, my actions were encouraged by relentless sideline cheering from my mother yelling, “You’re a king, Solo!” Just over a year ago, I took a bet on myself. A bet that a then-26-year-old Black kid could make something out of nothing. And while you could call this journey just about everything but easy, the reality is that raising $26 million with Calaxy was the easy part. The sacrifices I’ve made, the friends I’ve lost, the lack of idols to look up to, and making the decision to take a nose dive into a world of uncertainty are all invariably more difficult for those who look like me. From having to...

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek To Keep Joe Rogan On The Platform Amid The Podcaster's Racism Controversy

Over the past week, Joe Rogan has been in the headlines for his use of the n-word in his podcast, “The Joe Rogan Experience”. AfroTech previously reported that India.Arie became one of the latest musicians to pull her music catalog from Spotify. Her decision came in following the resurfaced videos, as well as the platform’s negligence of the COVID-19 misinformation shared on Rogan’s podcast, which Neil Young was the first to demand action. “Neil Young opened a door that I must walk through,” Arie wrote via Instagram. “I believe in freedom of speech. However, I find Joe Rogan problematic for reasons other than his Covid interviews. For me, it’s also his language around race.” In the midst of the controversy around Rogan, it looks like the podcaster will continue to stay on Spotify. The platform’s CEO Daniel Ek has recently stated his condemnation for Rogan’s actions but has no plans of removing him according to The Hollywood Reporter. While Ek addressed in a letter to staff that...

The Brooklyn Nets Join The Metaverse — Becoming The First Professional Sports Team To Do So

The Brooklyn Nets have joined the “Netaverse.” HypeBeast is reporting that the New York-based basketball team is offering what they’re calling “a revolutionary way to watch the NBA.” By using over 100 high-resolution cameras to create a full 360 virtual reality experience, fans who participate in the team’s investment in the Metaverse will be able to be on the court, in real-time, as they play ball. Fans can choose to watch the Brooklyn Nets from any part of the virtual Barclays Center, which is the first stadium to install this camera setup (but, they hope, they will not be the last). Fans can choose to either be behind the net, courtside or even in the middle of the court — and they don’t have to break the bank to get these once-coveted seats. A video explanation of how it works can be seen below. Welcome to the Netaverse! @Grady details a historic debut. #netaverse pic.twitter.com/dmrtn09xd6 — YES Network (@YESNetwork) January 16, 2022 The best part is, this camera setup can...
