She later added, “The path forward requires courage, commitment, and clarity of purpose. We will continue to serve as a partner on this journey. The app lets users invite friends from their contact list to an event, share the invite with a link, add photos to shared albums, and interact with an Apple Music playlist. “With Apple Invites, an event comes to life from the moment the invitation is created, and users can share lasting memories even after they get together,” Brent Chiu-Watson, Apple’s senior director of worldwide product marketing for apps and iCloud , said. “Apple Invites brings together capabilities our users already know and love across iPhone, iCloud, and Apple Music, making it easy to plan special events.” While an iCloud+ subscription, which starts at 99 cents, is required to create invites, anyone — including Android users — can RSVP and view information...

Target Is Being Sued By Its Shareholders For Allegedly Withholding The Risks Associated With DEI Efforts

Target’s shareholders claim they were not aware of the risks posed by the company’s DEI and other social initiatives. As AFROTECH™ previously reported, Target is among a growing list of major corporations that have announced they are scaling back their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) commitments. This has led to the removal of Target’s program that helped Black- and minority-owned businesses secure retail deals, and the company has stated it will no longer share reports with DEI groups. “We remain focused on driving our business by creating a sense of belonging for our team, guests and communities through a commitment to inclusion,” Target said, according to CNN. “Belonging for all is an essential part of our team and culture, helping fuel consumer relevance and business results.” Target’s decision has been met with criticism from shoppers. Some are taking their dollars to allies such as Costco since its board of directors and shareholders agreed to continue their DEI...

Costco's Shareholders Align With Its Board Of Directors' Interest And Reject Anti-DEI Proposal

Costco shareholders want to uphold DEI policies. As AFROTECH™ previously told you, Costco’s board of directors has requested that its shareholders reject a proposal introduced by the National Center for Public Policy Research (NCPPR) to eliminate its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. The NCPPR argues that upholding DEI efforts should not be permitted due to the Supreme Court’s ruling on affirmative action in June 2023. The ruling struck down race-conscious affirmative action across colleges and universities, NPR notes. However, Costco’s board of directors contends that the NCPPR has an agenda of “abolishing diversity initiatives,” and its critique of Costco’s DEI policy “reflects a policy bias,” according to Fox Business. “Our success at Costco Wholesale has been built on service to our critical stakeholders: employees, members, and suppliers. Our efforts around diversity, equity and inclusion follow our code of ethics: For our employees, these efforts are built...

'Bring Them On:' JPMorgan Chase CEO Remains Committed To DEI Values Despite Pressure From Shareholders

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon is not backing down from diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) commitments. According to Business Insider, Dimon confirmed that the financial services firm will continue to advance its DEI efforts and environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) policies despite pressure from the National Legal and Policy Center (NLPC), a conservative nonprofit organization. The NLPC has proposed that JPMorgan reevaluate how executive compensation is linked to the company’s racial equity goal. “Bring them on,” Dimon told CNBC at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. “We are going to continue to reach out to the Black community, the Hispanic community, the LGBT community , the veterans community.” In 2020, JPMorgan launched a $30 billion program to promote racial equity in personal finance, which included mortgage refinancing and partnerships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities . The bank also launched an “accountability framework” to...

RedNote Market Share Soars As Americans Brace For TikTok Ban: Everything We Know About The Chinese Social Media App

As American social media users brace for the Jan. 19 TikTok ban , thousands have begun searching for alternative apps to satiate their doom scrolling fix. While many American-based tech CEO’s such as Mark Zuckerberg had hoped that the TikTok ban would encourage users to flock to other short-form video players such as Instagram or YouTube Shorts, it seems that the masses have stumbled onto an unknown gem called Xiaohongshu instead. The app, which translates to RedNote in English, is owned by a Shanghai-based company known as Xingyin Information Technology, and touts itself as a lifestyle, social networking and e-commerce service . Given that RedNote primarily serves a Chinese audience, it defaults to Mandarin upon download, and exposes new users to an audience of hundreds of millions of overseas subscribers. The sudden influx of so-called “TikTok refugees” has caused RedNote to skyrocket in popularity, taking it to the number one position among the free apps chart on both the Apple...

Walmart Shareholders Pen Letter To CEO, Expressing 'Disappointment' Following Decision To Retract DEI Policies

Walmart shareholders are urging the company to reconsider and adjust its approach to DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiatives. In November 2024, the company, which has 1.6 million workers, announced it would be scaling back on its DEI policies, notes AP News. They join a list of companies, including Amazon, McDonald’s, and Meta. “We’ve been on a journey and know we aren’t perfect, but every decision comes from a place of wanting to foster a sense of belonging, to open doors to opportunities for all our associates, customers, and suppliers, and to be a Walmart for everyone,” Walmart said in a statement, according to AdWeek. Walmart’s shareholders, which consist of over 30 individuals, admit to feeling “deep disappointment” in Walmart’s stance. They want to uphold Walmart’s work in DEI as it has led to a sense of belonging for associates, and “when associates feel like they belong, they’re more engaged and empowered to deliver great service to our customers and members.” Its...

Apple's Board Urges Shareholders To Vote Against A Proposal That Would Dismantle Its DEI Initiatives

Despite pressure from a conservative group, Apple is going against the grain. As AFROTECH™ previously reported, Meta announced a hard stop to its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs and will no longer maintain its DEI team, effective immediately. The company stated it intended to place its attention “on applying fair and consistent practices to mitigate bias for everyone, regardless of their background.” “The legal and policy landscape surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the United States is changing,” Janelle Gale, Meta’s vice president of human resources, said in a memo. “The Supreme Court of the United States has recently made decisions signaling a shift in how courts will approach DEI. … The term ‘DEI’ has also become charged, in part because it is understood by some as a practice that suggests preferential treatment of some groups over others.” Meta now joins companies including Amazon, Walmart, and McDonald’s in retracting their DEI efforts...

Costco's Board Of Directors Requests For Shareholders To Vote Against A Policy That Would Remove Its DEI Program

Costco is doubling down on its decision to maintain its DEI policies. This comes amid several major companies retracting their commitments, such as Google. CNBC reported that Google had established new programs to empower Black staffers following the murder of George Floyd in 2020. At the time, its CEO, Sundar Pichai, stated the intention “to build sustainable equity for Google’s Black+ community, and externally, to make our products and programs helpful in the moments that matter most to Black users.” The company aimed for a benchmark of 30% of leadership being composed of underrepresented groups by 2025. However, in the years since, Google has fallen significantly short of that goal by reducing staff and shrinking programs related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), as has its parent company Alphabet. By mid-2023, DEI job postings by companies in general were showing a downward trend. Job site Indeed offered data that revealed a drop of 44% in postings compared to the...

Dame Dash's Roc-A-Fella Share Has Been Bought By The State Of New York

Dame Dash’s Roc-A-Fella share is no longer up for sale. As previously reported by AFROTECH™, Dame Dash was hit with an $800,000 judgment stemming from a copyright infringement and defamation lawsuit. Soon after, it was announced that his Roc-A-Fella share, valued at $1.2 million, would be put up for auction to cover his debt. The auction generated buzz as the share included partial ownership of Jay-Z’s debut album, “Reasonable Doubt,” and its associated songs. “Based on feedback I have received from interested parties (and I can’t mention names), this auction will likely bring out many household names in the sports and entertainment industries as well as those interested in a piece of a historically significant company, which holds an interest in a timeless debut album,” Dame Dash’s attorney Natraj Bhushan explained to Billboard at the time. The auction attracted attention from artists, including Drake and, unsurprisingly, Jay-Z, who allegedly made public claims that he would obtain...
