BMW And Louis Vuitton's Collaboration From 2014 May Have Been One Of The Most Sought-After Brand Collabs, Reportedly Generating 6.2M Google Searches

BMW and Louis Vuitton’s 2014 collaboration is reportedly considered the most sought-after brand collaboration ever. Through its research, women’s online retailer Public Desire determined the top 10 collaborations by analyzing various factors, including original price, resale value , price growth, accessibility, and public interest. According to information provided to AFROTECH™, the company then calculated a composite score for each collaboration, which was ranked in descending order based on its performance across these criteria. With a composite score of 98.0, the BMX x Louis Vuitton collaboration, which produced highly exclusive luxury luggage, had the highest growth in resale value. When BMW announced the collaboration, Adrian van Hooydonk, senior vice president of BMW Group Design, highlighted the use of CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced polymer) in the company’s i8 sports car as an example of its “intelligent lightweight construction philosophy.” “BMW and Louis Vuitton share both...

It was a special day for Ronald Yancey, Georgia Institute of Technology’s first Black graduate. CNN reports Yancey presented his granddaughter Deanna Yancey with her diploma for a master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering at the school’s commencement ceremony held on Friday, May 3, 2024 . This marked a full-circle moment for several reasons. Yancey had applied to her grandfather’s alma mater to partake in their online master’s program after she received a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Penn State University in 2020. “I didn’t tell my family I was applying, so when I got in, I got to read the acceptance email to my grandfather,” Deanna said in a news release. “He was so happy. He almost started jumping; he was so excited.” Deanna’s feat was made possible because Ronald had helped to break down racial barriers at the university. He endured various hardships during his time at the school. From the start, Ronald had faced two rejections from the school, and the...

Beyoncé's Haircare Line, Cécred, Is Not Only 'Validated by Science' But Also Self-Funded With No Partnerships Or Backing From Outside Investors

Beyoncé has released her next labor of love beyond the realms of music. Throughout her time in the limelight, the songstress and mother of three has never failed to disappoint behind the microphone or with her hair game. This is in part because of her mother, Tina Knowles, who once owned and operated hair salon Headliners in Houston, TX, according to Texas Monthly. “Hair has always been a very big part of our lives,” Tina told Essence. “Just as fashion saved our family, hair is how we made a living.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by ESSENCE (@essence) Beyoncé would work at her mother’s salon, sweeping its floors and listening to regular chatter from women as they sat ready to be served. One client, in particular, who was an opera singer, even became the affirmation for Beyoncé to become a performer. Today, Beyoncé has cemented herself as one of the greatest performers. This Nigerian Artist Makes Prosthetic Limbs For Dark Skin Tones

Today’s prosthetics seem geared toward white and lighter skin tones — if they even look “human” in the first place — but one Nigerian artist is looking to change that. John Amanam is a 32-year-old former movie special effects expert who has a passion for sculpting. A native of Nigeria, Amanam became fascinated with prosthetics after a close family member lost one of their limbs in a tragic accident. “I became emotional about amputees,” Amanam said to Reuters. “They had this feeling of discomfort whenever they were around other people. I saw it as a challenge. If I could give back or solve this need, it would go a long way to ease that emotional trauma and loss of confidence. I just want them to feel at home and be whole, aesthetically.” As a result, Amanam says that his customers feel a sense of relief and gratitude. The Nigerian artist started making prosthetic fingers, hands, arms, legs, and ears in 2017. He said that, as a general rule, it can take a few months to develop a...

Black Women Artists Rewina Beshue and Lalese Stamps Are Featured in Vans' Digital Museum

Vans isn’t just skating through Women’s History Month with performative actions — the brand is providing resources to women-identifying creators. This month, instead of spending its allocated budget on traditional ads, Vans dedicated those resources to creatives — including mixed-media artist Rewina Beshue and ceramicist Lalese Stamp — to actually create inspiring works for a digital museum. The online exhibit showcases drawings, sculptures, music videos, custom shoes, digital animations, and more. “I’m drawn to projects that uplift and shine a light on topics that are important to Black women taking up space in the art world,” said Beshue. “I love using my art and my platform to promote representation and inclusivity. Growing up, there wasn’t much Black representation in the art world, or at least I wasn’t exposed to it. It was hard to find. It’s really important that we use our platforms to promote representation of creative women in the mainstream world.” “I’ve always worn Vans,”...

Akon Proceeds With Plans to Construct $6B 'Real-Life Wakanda' Despite COVID-19

It’s official, “Akon City” is still on its way! R&B sensation, Akon announced that construction for his futuristic pan-African city will begin next year, AP News reports. The $6 billion project will still proceed despite global tourism’s uncertain future due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Inspired by the hit film, “Black Panther,” Akon first set his sights on creating a utopian city back in 2018 and has described it as a “real-life Wakanda,” much like the technologically advanced fictional African place portrayed in the film. Akon hopes his city will serve as a “home back home” for Black Americans and others facing racial injustices. His aim is also to provide much-needed jobs for Senegalese. “The system back home treats them unfairly in so many different ways that you can never imagine. And they only go through it because they feel there is no other way,” Akon said, according to AP News. Born in the United States — to Senegalese parents — the “Lonely” singer spent the majority of his...

Amid coronavirus, UTA Artist Space is pivoting their exhibition to be a first-ever online venture that will feature the work of 12 emerging Black artists now through July 3. Renaissance: Noir — curated by Myrtis Bedolla, Baltimore-based owner of Galerie Myrtis — will address “Blackness on the continuum of the historiographies of Black artists’ narratives that assert, individually and collectively, their state of mind and state of being Black,” per a statement reported by The Hollywood Reporter . This exhibit arrives on time for the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter and liberation movements following the recent police killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and others. On her exhibit, Bedolla stated: “Renaissance: Noir is more poignant than ever as we share these thought-provoking works which depict the social, political, and historical journey of the Black experience through intergenerational narratives. I am excited to be partnering with UTA Artist Space on such...

Trademark vs. Copyright

Competition in every industry is getting fierce. Unfortunately, this can result in some individuals doing everything they can to survive in their industry, even infringing copyrights and trademarks in order to beat the competition. However, there are a few ways you can protect your intellectual property from being snatched by the competition. If your copyright or trademark is registered, no one will be able to use your creations without your approval. Individuals who are new to the world of intellectual property may wonder what the key differences are between copyrights and trademarks. Trademark vs. Copyright Although there are similarities between trademarks and copyrights, the differences between trademark and copyright are significant. These types of legal safeguards may sometimes overlap, and this can sometimes result in the loss of money and time when the wrong type of protection is registered. What is a Trademark? A trademark is anything that represents your brand in the...

Instagram Is Getting More Strict On Adult Content

Instagram is moving toward more family-friendly content with the reduction of inappropriate posts that may not necessarily violate community guidelines. “A sexually suggestive post will still appear in Feed if you follow the account that posts it, but this type of content may not appear for the broader community in Explore or hashtag pages,” Facebook said in a blog post. Instagram currently prohibits a list of sexual content including images of female nipples, intercourse, and genitals. However, the company allows photos of post-mastectomy scarring, women actively breastfeeding, and nudity in photos of paintings and sculptures. The lines are a little blurred when it comes to the type of content Instagram will be policing. Instagram said that it will limit sexually suggestive posts and other content that teeters the line of breaking its rules from being recommended on Explore and hashtag pages. “We use a variety of signals, for example, if an account has recently gone against our...

8 Black Historical Figures Who Deserve Their Own Biopic And The Actors Who Should Play Them

We’ve barely scratched the surface of historical biopics centered on our Black heroes, heroines and everyday people. We’ve just done our list of who should play Angela Davis in the upcoming biopic helmed by Julie Dash. In honor of Black History Month, here are eight more Black historical figures that deserve the Hollywood treatment, as well as the actors and actresses who should portray them. 1) Emayatzy Corinealdi as Mae Jemison Photo: NASA, Justin Stephens/CBS Justin Stephens/CBS ©2018 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. All Rights Reserved With the critical acclaim of films such as First Man and Hidden Figures , it boggles our mind as to why their hasn’t been biopic on Mae Jemison. Jemison is the first African American woman to travel in space when she went into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour on September 12, 1992. Resemblance aside, Corinealdi more than proved she can carry a film when she played the lead role of in Ava DuVernay’s indie classic Middle Of Nowhere . As Ruby, a...

How VR gloves are helping the visually impaired experience some of the world's greatest art

‘Touching Masterpieces’ is an incredible VR experience that allows the blind and visually impaired to experience some of the world’s greatest art through a pair of gloves. Art has been around for centuries, but that doesn’t mean it has been accessible. Many take for granted the ability to view sculptures, paintings and photographs. But for the visually impaired or blind, that hasn’t been an option. Previously, without visuals, there was only opportunity to experience art through audio descriptions. Now there’s finally an answer for the millions of people who haven’t been able to see sculptured masterpieces. NeuroDigital has been working in the VR space to replicate some of the world’s most highly regarded sculptures. They set out to make 3D models of art including The Head of Nefertiti by Thutmose, Venus de Milo by Alexandros of Antioch and even David by Michelangelo.  Through laser scans of the originals, they were able to replicate the masterpieces. Users can then put on haptic...
