Andre Powell Invested Nearly $1M Of His Own Funds To Launch 'The World's First Franchised Rideshare Company'

Black-owned rideshare company Goldsainte is making significant strides. The Charlotte, NC-based company, founded by Andre Powell in 2021, is marketed as “the world’s first franchised rideshare.” The business is looking to disrupt the $70 billion dollar industry and is taking on a business model that will allow riders to benefit from luxury vehicles with advanced proprietary technology provided by franchisees. The model is also inspired by Powell’s background as a multi-unit Jimmy John’s franchisee through his venture APEM Restaurant Group. “It made more sense to scale through franchising because the better part of my career was spent as a multi-unit franchisee,” Powell told the Charlotte Business Journal. Currently, Goldsainte offers two verticals featuring franchisee-owned vehicles. The first, Goldsainte XL, offers Infiniti QX80s to lease or own by the franchisee and is available for franchising across 38 states . Goldsainte Premium is available in select U.S. markets, according to...

Wheelchair Users Wait Longer & Pay More For Uber And Lyft Rides, Study Finds

Ride-share apps can be one of the easiest and most convenient ways to get around — unless you’re disabled. A recent report has found that  if you need a wheelchair accessible Uber or Lyft in New York City, it will often be slower and more expensive. The study “Still Left Behind” — conducted by New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI) — backs up what many disabled people have already said about ride share apps. For the study, the NYLPI compared quotes, fares, and wait times from 224 pairs of ride request (448 total trip requests) to and from major destinations in NYC’s five boroughs. NYLPI found that Uber’s wait times were more than twice as long for wheelchair accessible rides and Lyft could only meet 38 percent of the requests. Meanwhile, Juno — who only operates in NYC — didn’t offer on-demand wheelchair accessible vehicles at all. Instead, Juno’s site asks users to book rides by phone at least 24 hours in advance. According to NYPLI , Juno’s request is “notwithstanding...

Uber Users in Denver Can Now Purchase Public Transit Tickets

Uber is slowly aiming to become the one-stop shop for all your transportation needs. Now, customers in Denver can use the app to purchase public transit tickets, TechCrunch reported . For this project, Uber partnered with Masabi — a London based technology company that develops mobile ticketing for public transportation. Masabi currently works with 30 transportation agencies worldwide, including New York City’s MTA, Los Angeles’ Metrolink, and Boston’s MBTA. According to TechCrunch, Uber Head of Transit David Reich said in a statement: ”For the first time ever, taking an Uber trip can mean taking public transit. We are excited to expand our collaboration with RTD and Masabi  to make Denver the first city in the world where riders can purchase transit tickets and ride public transit seamlessly through the Uber app. With this step, we are moving closer to making Uber’s platform a one-stop shop for transportation access, from shared rides to buses and bikes.”   Back in January , Uber...

Lyft's Program Offering Cheap Rides To Grocery Stores Will Roll Out Across the Nation

Living far from a grocery store without reliable access to transportation can make eating healthy nearly impossible. Often, people can’t access fresh fruits or veggies, and are dependent on fast food restaurants and corner stores. However, the expansion of one Lyft program may be able to help with that. Last year, the ride-share company piloted its Lyft Grocery Acces s program in Washington, D.C. This program provided families living in food deserts with a $2.50 flat fare to get to the grocery store. Today, Lyft announced that the program would be expanding across the country . In a blog post, Lyft said: “Through this expansion, we look forward to partnering with local organizations and nonprofits to provide low-income families and seniors living in food deserts with deeply discounted flat fare rides to get to and from grocery stores. Affordable and reliable access to transportation can have a huge impact on this problem, and we want to help.” About 23.5 million people in the United...

Some Uber Drivers Could Get Stock Options Ahead Of The Company's IPO

Ride-sharing giant, Uber is letting drivers get stock options in preparation of the company’s IPO, TechCrunch reports. Driver’s who have logged 2,500, 5,000, 10,000 or 20,000 rides will receive $100, $500, $1,000 or $10,000 in common stock. Uber is also set to give drivers who have completed less rides smaller cash bonuses. Uber’s program has been in the works since 2016, but struggled to come to fruition because of security hurdles that stops non-full time employees from holding private stock in a company. Uber’s biggest competitor, Lyft announced in March that it was also launching a program to compensate drivers with stock. Uber and Lyft have extended other consumer offerings and other rewards programs for riders in an effort to gain new customers and retain old ones. Discounts on Lyft and Uber have become more common, especially as other ride-share companies like Via and Maven have entered the space. Last month Uber announced its rewards program that lets customers earn points...

Uber and Lyft Drivers In Los Angeles Strike Over Slashed Wages

On Monday, hundreds of Uber and Lyft drivers across Los Angeles held a 25-hour strike to protest against pay cuts and poor working conditions, as reported by NBC News . Their strike also included protesting together outside of Uber’s offices in Redondo Beach, California. The strike was partially driven by Uber reversing a September 2018 decision that increased the per-minute rate and minimum fare, Curbed Reported . Essentially, drivers now have to take a 25 percent cut in pay. Advocacy group Rideshare Drivers United-Los Angeles, demanded Uber reverse its decision to slash wages and guarantee a $28-per-hour minimum rate, as reported by NBC Los Angeles . Both Uber and Lyft have faced criticism before for their poor wages . Although Ridester — an online source for rideshare drivers — notes that Uber claims drivers make $25 per hour and Lyft says they make $35, each company takes heavy cuts (25 percent and 20 percent of each fare, respectively, along with booking fees). Both Uber and...

The CDC Has Launched Its First Investigation Into E-Scooter Injuries

Scooter sharing systems have become increasingly popular across the United States as people look for efficient ways to get around. Companies like Bird, JUMP, and Lime all boast dockless e-scooters that make travel simple — but, how safe are they? At the request of Austin Public Health and the Austin Transportation Department, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has launched the first-ever investigation into e-scooter injuries, as reported by CNBC . “We want to identify the risk factors for those who get injured, how severe the injuries are, and why they’re getting hurt,” Jeff Taylor, manager of the Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance Unit with Austin Public Health, told CNBC. Taylor will be overseeing the study, along with three epidemiologists from the CDC. They’ve actually collected their data already, so the study is now being summarized for its final report, according to Engadget . Most people know that new technology always has kinks to work out and the e-scooter...

NYC Votes for Uber and Lyft Drivers To Get Minimum Wage

New York City’s Taxi and Limousine Commission just voted to set a minimum wage for app-based drivers working for companies like Uber and Lyft. The new policy requires drivers to make $17.22 per hour— $15 minimum wage, plus paid time off —which could result in a pay raise of over $9,000 annually. The historic decision comes from a TLC study revealing most drivers currently take home roughly $11.90 per hour after expenses. Drivers are legally independent contractors and therefore are not protected under minimum-wage laws. The new rule is set to go in effect in 20 days. Economists developed a formula that would factor in trip mileage and time plus the percentage of time drivers have customers. Labor non-profit Independent Drivers Guild has been organizing to increase pay for app-based drivers for the past two years. “Today we brought desperately needed relief to 80,000 working families. All workers deserve the protection of a fair, livable wage and we are proud to be setting the new...
