The Federal Reserve has cut interest rates for the first time since March 2020 — the beginning stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Forbes reported that on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2024, the U.S. central banking system announced the significant move that will have a widespread effect on Americans’ finances, making borrowing less expensive. Following a split decision on whether to make a 25- or 50-basis-point cut, the Fed’s policy-setting committee reduced the federal funds rate by 50 basis points. As inflation continues to moderate, the adjustment lowers the interest rate to a range of 4.75% to 5%, down from 5.25% to 5.5%, which were the highest levels since 2001. “Today, the Federal Open Market Committee decided to reduce the degree of policy restraint by lowering our policy interest rate by 1/2 percentage point,” Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said at a news conference following the announcement. “ This decision reflects our growing confidence that, with an appropriate recalibration of our...
In 2023, Beyoncé made it even more apparent that she is a powerhouse. Now, her lyrics that state she “just might be a Black Bill Gates in the making” are more timely for the artist as her net worth has increased. Beyoncé is one of the most powerful women in the world who has gone above and beyond her time in Destiny’s Child and cemented herself as a solo artist, businesswoman, and arguably amongst the best performers of all time. Additionally, she has become an investor in various companies, both on her own and as part of her marriage with her longtime husband, Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter. Plus, the artist has earned her accolades and accomplishments while being a mother to three children — Blue Ivy, Rumi, and Sir Carter. On Dec. 13, Forbes reported that the global superstar “is well on her way to becoming a billionaire” as Beyoncé has reached a net worth of an estimated $800 million. In 2022, AFROTECH shared that her estimated net worth was $500 million. The key factors behind the big...

However, his success did not begin with the massive collaborations that made him famous. The son of two Palestinian immigrants, DJ Khaled and his family had early roots in Louisiana before moving to Orlando, FL. Based on a CNBC report, his time in Orlando sparked the beginning of his musical career. At the age of 13, Khaled began his work as a DJ in his parent’s garage. Those humble beginnings would lead to Khaled acquiring small gigs as a DJ, being occasionally invited to work at nightclubs and play music at local studios. This type of work would earn him about $100 per week. Although he was making it work, CNBC further reports that the small gigs were not enough to sustain Khaled, and he had to move back in with his parents in New Orleans, LA, after they...
Throughout history, the world has been introduced to many people with the “it” factor. While it may not be possible to articulate exactly what “it” is, it’s a beautiful combination of talent, influence, likeability, and authenticity. Some of the people described this way are Beyonce, Michael Jackson, Denzel Washington, and Tina Turner. And when it comes to sports, one of the names sure to come up as having “it” is Deion Sanders. From his multi-sport professional career to his captivating personality, fans have admired Sanders for years. But this star power wasn’t by happenstance — it came from hard work, dedication, and faith. Sanders was born in Fort Myers, FL, and began his sports career early in life across several sports, eventually attending Florida State University as a decorated athlete. His collegiate career would land him a spot in the NFL and the MLB. Simultaneously playing in both professional leagues for several years, Sanders completed 270 solo tackles, five forced...
A few names will come up in conversations about musical GOATS. From Michael Jackson to Aretha Franklin to Beyoncé, music fans have decades of musical options to tap into. But one could argue that no list is complete without the musical variety of Prince. Prince Rogers Nelson, commonly known as Prince, displayed musical talents at an early age that defined his long career of creativity. Throughout his tenure, he recorded classic hits such as “When Doves Cry,” “1999,” and his biggest chart-topping single and album — “Purple Rain.” It is well documented that the artist was adamant about owning the music he produced. And when he was entrenched in a legal battle relating to ownership, he went to what some might consider extreme measures to get his point across and fight for the creative freedom he desired.
Since the beginning of her music career, Beyoncé has rocked Black fashion. When Destiny’s Child first officially formed and up until her own solo career, the superstar wore designs created by her mother, Tina Knowles-Lawson. Fast forward to today, and Beyoncé has yet to let up on showing love to Black-owned brands.
At one point in time, girl groups ran the world (or the culture so to speak). From Total to En Vogue to Xscape, and everyone in between, the ladies dominated the charts, and despite the fact there are very few that exist today, it is worth taking a trip down memory lane to highlight some of those who left a mark on history. While girl groups dominated in the late 1990s and early 2000s, it is important to note that their existence started way before that. The Shirelles set the tone in 1961 when they became the first Black girl group to have a No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart through their smash single “Will You Love Me Tomorrow.” According to Lifetime , the group consisted of four teen girls: Shirley Owens, Beverly Lee, Addie “Micki” Harris, and Doris Coley. These ladies weren’t the only product from the ’60s to dominate the charts and lay the blueprint for those who came after them. The Supremes , originally known as the Primettes, auditioned for the legendary Motown...
Dance transcends the arena stage for Larry and Laurent Bourgeois, otherwise known as Les Twins. While our favorite duo continue to impress audiences on Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour, they have taken up other avenues to spread positivity and make a difference.
If there is a discussion about debut appearances, 2003 has to be a part of the conversation. This time period was when Beyoncé became a solo artist and released “Crazy in Love,” and the NBA draft class welcomed what would become two of the league’s most impactful players, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony. Fast forward 20 years, and each person’s cultural standing is out of this world. However, for Anthony, an active part of his legacy has ended with announcing his retirement from professional basketball. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Carmelo Anthony (@carmeloanthony) Carmelo Anthony was born in Brooklyn, NY, and leveraged his basketball talents to begin a collegiate career at Syracuse University. During his freshman year at the institution, Anthony became a breakout star, leading the team to its first and only to date NCAA men’s basketball tournament championship. The collegiate stardom would translate to Anthony’s NBA career. As the third pick by the Denver Nuggets,...
