South African billionaire Elon Musk is known for his desire to swallow up companies and rebrand them with his own trendy vision. The Tesla CEO previously used his familial wealth to purchase stakes in such businesses as PayPal, SpaceX and of course, X (formerly Twitter). Now, according to official statements made by the Trump administration cabinet pick, the emerald mine profiteer is considering buying the rights to Vine, a defunct app which predates TikTok . This would be a major development in the world of social media, since the latter is still potentially facing a long-term ban within the United States, unless the app’s parent company ByteDance can agree to divest to American financial interests. When prompted by a fellow X user about bringing Vine back into the fray to fill in the power vacuum left by TikTok, Musk simply responded, “We’re looking into it.” So, now seems like as good a time as any to examine what Vine is (or was), how Elon could bring it back to compete with...
TikTok has been at the center of many recent conversations. Disney star Skai Jackson is among the people who have tapped into TikTok’s ubiquity. Jackson has been vocal about using TikTok and how it has impacted her personal life. According to a report from Blavity, the 22-year-old has a partnership with hair brand Cantu Beauty. She continued, “It’s just so amazing to see that there are millions of people in the world dealing with the same issues as me...
To say that Jordan Peele revolutionized the Black horror genre is something of an understatement. “ Get Out” continues to be one of the most critically acclaimed suspense thriller movies of this century. Meanwhile, from stints directing the series reboot of “ The Twilight Zone” and HBO’s “ Lovecraft Country” to movies like “ Nope” and “ Us ,” Peele has mastered the art of centering the Black experience within the horror genre, while still creating content that is relatable to a wider audience. While most people initially recognized Peele from his hit comedy sketch show “ Key & Peele” that he helmed with co-host and friend Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele earned his acting and comedic chops much earlier. With all of his accolades and continued success, one might be wondering just how much this pivoting actor turned filmmaker is worth. Jordan Peele’s Humble NYC Beginnings Born in 1979, Jordan Peele is a native New Yorker who grew up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. He was raised...

LeBron James continues to show the world why he’s the king. Forbes released their list of the 10 Highest-Paid Athletes and the NBA superstar was No. 2, making him the second-highest-paid athlete in the world. While his skills on the court contributed heavily to the Cleveland native’s net worth, which AfroTech previously reported, now sits at an estimated $850 million, it has been his endeavors outside of basketball that led to his ranking on the list. Per reports, he drew in about $121.2 million in 2021 thanks to ventures like his “Space Jam” reboot as well as various endorsement deals. His talk show, “The Shop: Uninterrupted” also contributed to his earnings. He trails Argentine soccer player Lionel Messi who was named the richest athlete in the world in 2021, bringing in an estimated $130 million. In true King fashion, though, LeBron James is only in competition with himself, knocking out his previous record of earning $96.5 million in the previous year. On the court, the LA Laker...

History was made this past weekend in the box office as Nia DaCosta’s “Candyman” became the first No. 1 film directed by a Black woman. According to IndieWire, the film grossed an estimated $22.3 million in its initial domestic weekend. The film’s earnings surpassed its projection of $15 million. Variety reported that the film’s release was delayed numerous times due to the coronavirus pandemic. While “Candyman” was initially set to hit movie theaters last year, the decision to delay its release ultimately worked in the film’s utmost favor. Both old and new fans filled movie theaters across the nation and brought in a diverse audience. “Universal believed it would attract Black viewers with the pedigree of Get Out and Us , and it did,” reported IndieWire. “However, the appeal was more diverse: Per the studio’s audience survey, 37 percent of the audience was Black, white was 30 percent, Latinos 22 percent, and Asians 5 percent. That spread was key to reaching the higher number.” With...

Quibi is shutting down after only six months of operation. In an open letter , founders Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman confirmed the end of the mobile streaming service that raised close to $2 billion in funding. “We started with the idea to create the next generation of storytelling and because of you, we were able to create and deliver the best version of what we imagined Quibi to be,” the letter reads. “So it is with an incredibly heavy heart that today we are announcing that we are winding down the business and looking to sell its content and technology assets.” Quibi was designed for people on-the-go, but by its launch in early April, the global pandemic was nearing its first peak and potential users were more than likely self-isolating at home. Additionally, the unemployment crisis may have played a part despite Quibi’s fairly inexpensive plans: $4.99 (with ads) or $7.99 (ad-free). However, during its short-lived existence, the short-form entertainment service provided...
