Which programming language should I learn first?

This article was originally published on 07/15/2019 There are tons of programming languages out there. But how do you know where to start? Which ones should you learn first and prioritize? The experts at Codenewbies walk the Afrotech audience through how to structure their coding journey. If you’ve decided to learn to code, then the next step is figuring out what language to learn. There are hundreds of languages you could learn, and if you end up coding professionally, you’ll most likely learn more than one. But how do you pick the first one to focus on? There are a few things to keep in mind. The first is how easy the language is to learn. Learning anything for the first time can be challenging, and it helps if we can connect the new thing we’re learning to something already familiar to us. The Python Programming Language Just Got Rid Of These Racially-Charged Terms

The creator of programming language Python has officially banned its master/slavery terminology. The use of the terms “master” and “slave” aren't exclusive to Python, and have sparked many a debate in the tech community due to their connotations, and their connection to America’s sad history. Things came to a head last week when Python developer Victor Skinner  submitted four pull requests  to remove the words from the Python lexicon, according to Motherboard. “For diversity reasons, it would be nice to try to avoid ‘master’ and ‘slave’ terminology, which can be associated with slavery,” Skinner wrote. The request led to a bevy of heated commentary from other techies on  Python.org . One user, Steven Daprano,  argued  "master" and "slave" are actually positive terms: “I strongly disagree with this as a general principle. Master/slave" is a powerful, obvious metaphor which works well and is not the same as parent/child, server/client or employer/worker. In fact, in the BDSM...

That’s how crazy it could be,” he said. Cuban is a serial investor who is embracing artificial intelligence in his daily life. He said AI technology has been helpful for the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks. “For the Mavs and for other businesses, we’re using all the new text-to-video stuff where you can just say ‘show me a guy carrying a rugby ball and that drop kicks it into a basketball basket,’ and it’ll give you 10 seconds of that in a minute. Just being able to be creative, whether it’s from a...

Watch Now: Kunle Oshiyoye, Software Engineer At GitHub, Breaks Down Go Testing And AI Applications At AFROTECH™ Conference 2024

Artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs) may dominate today’s conversations, but beneath the innovation lies traditional software engineering — the bedrock that makes these systems work. At AFROTECH™ 2024 , Kunle Oshiyoye, a software engineer at GitHub, shared insights from his work on AI technologies, his background as a graduate student at Georgia Tech studying machine learning, and his hands-on experience building and maintaining robust software systems. During the workshop, Oshiyoye explored idiomatic patterns and practical strategies for writing effective tests in the Go programming language, emphasizing why testing serves as both a safety net and a validation strategy. “Testing, to me at least, is a way to validate, to verify what you’re writing,” Oshiyoye said. He referenced a favorite quote: “A good programmer is somebody who always looks both ways before crossing a one-way street.” Purchase your ticket to AFROTECH™ Conference 2025 now!   View this post...
