We’ve all left a grocery store and saw someone pushing a shopping cart. One group pushes the shopping cart into cart corrals or marches over to the store employee who is collecting carts in the area. The other group pushes the shopping cart far enough away from them to be able to back their car out of the parking space and drive away. The latter group couldn’t care less whether the wind moves that cart along, denting someone else’s car, running over someone’s foot or causing a car accident by an unsuspecting driver. They’ve gotten what they needed, and they’re going about their day. In their mind, it’s the store employee’s problem to fix the shopping cart havoc. Observers watching this person are often participating in the shopping cart theory , judging those who don’t return carts as vigilantes who don’t care about others. How Does The Shopping Cart Theory Relate To A Business Owner Or Employee? The shopping cart theory is often brought up with the phrase, “If no one was looking.”...
Over the span of his career, Steve Harvey has become one of the biggest names in entertainment. Two students have made beauty supply products more accessible for their peers. While attending the University of Michigan, Mia Wilson and Rico Ozuna-Harrison recognized securing beauty products for people of color was far from easy. The nearest beauty supply store requires a 20-minute drive to Ypsilanti, MI, forcing students to purchase last resort products from nearby stores. “Supplies aren’t directly on campus and there are no stores or beauty supplies for students of color nearby. The stores on campus are just Walgreens and CVS,” Wilson told AfroTech. “So, oftentimes you can’t find the proper products that will best suit our hair types in those stores.” The inconvenience sparked the inception of YOUniversity Beauty Supply Machine through their business Innovending LLC, to ensure Black and brown students were represented at the University of Michigan. The beauty dispensary can be found in the basement of the university’s Union building and students can purchase hair oil, durags,...
Twitter is about to get messy! According to Complex, the social media platform has announced that it will test a “dislike” button in order to improve conversations held on the platform. Chatter about the new feature began on July 21 after select users began to receive messages from Twitter that confirmed that they could now dislike or “downvote” tweet replies. The company also reassured users that their downvotes would be totally anonymous and not visible to the public. On the other hand, Twitter says that this feature will help them to “understand what people think is valuable to the conversations.” More details were provided by the Twitter Support account which said that only select iOS users would be able to view the option for “upvotes” and “downvotes” which currently are displayed as “likes.” “Some of you on iOS may see different options to up or down vote on replies,” read the tweet. “We’re testing this to understand the types of replies you find relevant in a convo, so we can...

Earlier this month, Twitter confirmed that it would release features to control the amount of replies user received on tweets. The company said today that its “hide replies” feature will officially launch in June , giving users more control over their conversations. The newest announcement comes after a few Twitter updates set to make the company’s user experience more pleasant. Twitter, like many other social media platforms, has been battling an influx of hate speech over the past few years. Twitter has banned dehumanizing speech, suspended hundreds of thousands of robot and abusive accounts and updated its reporting processes to target user violations on its platform. But some of Twitter’s efforts fall flat. The company said that it would begin labeling tweets from some public figures that break its rules under its public interest clause. Direct threats won’t be tolerated; however, the lines seem to be blurred on the other types of offenses public figures can toy with. Twitter...
The city of Raleigh is launching a groundbreaking drone program that could change the way hospitals approach transporting supplies. Getting medical supplies from one location to another can be a time-consuming task for some hospitals — especially those in large metropolitan areas — and when you’re transporting materials like blood or organs, every second counts. Hospitals are now turning to tech to save time. Recently, UPS partnered with Matternet , a drone tech company, to deliver medical samples at WakeMed’s Raleigh campus using unmanned drones. WakeMed is a group of healthcare buildings, including hospitals, with facilities throughout the city. Both the Federal Aviation Administration and the North Carolina Department of Transportation provided oversight for the project, according to the press release. Not only is this an interesting application of drone technology, but it marks a historical moment. Bala Ganesh, vice president of UPS’ advanced technology group, said, according to...

In Atomic Habits , James Clear emphasizes the power of tiny improvements, showing how habits shape outcomes in business and life. Entrepreneurs who master their daily routines, decision-making, and mindset can set themselves up for long-term success.
