The year 2020 was — to say the least — a crazy year, but according to retail giant Nordstrom, last year was a year for “reflection.” According to a recent press release put out by the company, executives were taking notes in the wake of the social and political upheavals of 2020. The Black Lives Matter movement , amongst many other movements, let many Fortune 500 companies know — in no uncertain terms — that “window dressing” wasn’t going to be enough. People were tired of being used as pawns during one month of the year, only to be tossed aside when it was no longer politically expedient to champion their causes. “We are a part of the communities we serve, and that means we have a responsibility to create a sense of welcoming and belonging for all,” said Pete Nordstrom, chief brand officer and president of Nordstrom, Inc., in a statement . “We know our impact extends beyond our own walls and we’re committed to taking steps to be a part of the solution by making Nordstrom a better,...

On a Monday morning in late August, Nordstrom sent out a company-wide letter in which the fashion giant addressed the looming elephant in the room following a summer of turmoil after the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. From there leaders in the company leapt into action forming the Nordstrom Diversity Inclusion and Belonging Council, which is designed to drive diversity and change within the company. But as actions speak louder than words, the brand has issued a challenge to itself, setting a series of goals that include increasing corporate diversity and leadership opportunities. By the end of 2025, they will increase Black and Latinx populations in people-manager roles by at least 50 percent. Nordstrom has also committed to making improvements in the marketplace, including prioritizing the diversity of brands they collaborate with. Also, taking it a step further by pledging $500 million in retail sales to brands owned by, operated by or designed by Black and/or Latinx...

The Shakur family does not play when it comes to their own. Complex reports that Sekywia Shakur — sister of the late rapper 2Pac — has taken legal action against their late mother’s estate executor with accusations of him committing embezzlement. Both Sekyiwa and the Tupac Shakur Foundation claim that Tom Whalley refused to surrender personal items belonging to the legendary rapper, including cars, jewelry, artwork, and more. Whalley became the executor of their late mother, Afeni Shakur-Davis’, estate after she died in 2016. Originally the items belonged to the “California Love” emcee before he passed in 1996. “He has effectively embezzled millions of dollars for his own benefit,” Sekyiwa wrote in court documents. “Whalley has unreasonably enriched himself at the expense of the beneficiaries and in bad faith by taking excessive compensation in a position from which he should properly be barred based on the inherent conflict of interest.”
