Samuel L. Jackson and LaTanya Richardson Jackson have given back to somewhere that holds a special place in their hearts. The married couple donated $5 million toward the renovation of Spelman College’s John D. Rockefeller Fine Arts building, the historically Black college’s largest alumnae donation in its history, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Others joined the two in supporting the arts building. According to the outlet, George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, their friends, donated $10 million, the Bank of America donated $2 million and descendants of John D. Rockefeller donated $300,000. The contributions totaled to $17.3 million, which will help to keep the historic Spelman arts alive for the next generations of students to come. “Renovation talk has been going on since I arrived at Spelman over seven and a half years ago,” said chair of the Theater and Performance Department Aku Kadogo. “You don’t really believe it until you see it, so I’m excited that this is happening.”

To provide a space for Black talent in tech, OneTen — a group of industry executives aiming to hire and build Black individuals to create an equitable and inclusive workforce — has launched its inaugural scholarship program to provide support for over 3,500 students over the next two years, a press release states. The program was created to spearhead underserved Black talent toward the tech industry — with a focus on four core tech competencies: digital marketing, business analytics, front end developer, and predictive analytics — despite not acquiring four-year degrees. “By investing in talent transformation, we can help remove the barriers to diversity in tech. Howard University sweethearts Eddie C. Brown and C. Sylvia Brown have just made the largest alumni donation the Historically Black College and University (HBCU) has ever received. According to the university, the couple pledged $5 million, which will be allocated toward Graduation Retention Access to Continued Excellence (GRACE), a need-based fund established by Howard University President Dr. Wayne A. I. Frederick in 2014. “We are extremely grateful to Eddie and Sylvia for making this historic gift to Howard University,” Frederick shared in a press release. “The GRACE Grant has helped to eliminate financial barriers to education for Howard students, and I am thrilled that the Browns were inspired to commit such a generous gift to this important fund. One thing about Target, they’re going to pay it forward. As AfroTech previously reported, the retail giant announced this past April, that it will provide $2 billion in support toward products from over 500 Black-owned businesses. Now, they’ve announced in a blog post that they will be allocating $100 million in funding to Black communities through 2025.
