A Pharmacy Has Opened In Avondale, OH — In Addition To Being The First In Nearly Two Decades, It's Also Black-Owned

A Black pharmacist has opened a pharmacy to fill a void in an Ohio neighborhood. On April 1, 2024, Dr. Emmanuel Ayanjoke held a grand opening for Altev Community Pharmacy in Avondale, OH, according to WCPO-9 (an affiliate of ABC based in Cincinnati, OH). For nearly two decades, Avondale did not have a pharmacy, making it a pharmacy desert, especially for locals who don’t have reliable transportation. The outlet details that Altev Community Pharmacy has a free discount program for customers who come to pick up their prescriptions. This falls under Ayanjoke’s overall mission to advance healthcare in the Black community. “It’s all about our patients,” Ayanjoke told the outlet. “It’s all about our dedication to their care.” Vice Mayor Jan-Michele Lemon Kearney; Cincinnati City Council members Scotty Johnson and Seth Walsh; Congressman Greg Landsman; and Hamilton County Commission President Alicia Reece attended Altev Community Pharmacy’s grand opening ceremony, per the outlet. Ludacris Donates $10K To Daddy-Daughter Duo Behind App Connecting Incarcerated Parents To Their Kids

When a family member becomes incarcerated, there becomes a disconnect, especially when that person’s a mother or father. Thankfully, as AfroTech previously reported, Jay’Aina “Jay Jay” Patton and her father Antoine, an ex-prisoner, developed Photo Patch, a program and mobile app that connects imprisoned parents to their children. Due to their personal experience with the unjust and oppressive prison system, Jay Jay and Antoine are now changing the way that children can communicate with their loved ones who are currently incarcerated. On a recent appearance on the “Ellen DeGeneres Show,” the founders gave more insight on the company’s mission, which is also to help more girls of color get into tech. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ellen DeGeneres (@theellenshow) “Right now, I’m on a mission to help 10,000 girls of color get into the world of tech and start their career path,” shared Jay Jay. “Just for me, there’s not much representation of people who look like me in the...

Ohio just opened its first Black-owned breast cancer center! According to a press release provided to AfroTech, The Kim Jacobs Breast Cancer Center opened its doors in an emotional grand opening ceremony on May 1, 2021. After the tragic loss of his mother to breast cancer, Lavar Jacobs told WKYC that this has been a dream since his mother passed away in 2009 at the age of 49. “I’ve always had the vision of the Kim Jacobs Breast Cancer Resource Center,” said Jacobs, according to WKYC. “She didn’t get to do everything she had planned. She deserves more of a legacy.” The Akron, Ohio native’s vision for the center also made history as it’s the first-ever Black-owned breast cancer center in the state of Ohio. As he’s also the founder of a nonprofit organization Not Just October — founded in 2014 — Jacobs emphasizes while wearing pink in October brings awareness to breast cancer and is a nice gesture, people are affected by the disease year-round.
