Through entrepreneurship, Ibukun Olubiyi is looking to create a lasting impact in Canada’s capital city. According to a news release, Olubiyi reportedly opened the first Chick-fil-A restaurant in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada . She was born in Lagos, Nigeria, and spent time in London, England, and Dublin, Ireland, but her journey to becoming an owner-operator was made possible by moving to Canada. Olubiyi pursued her studies at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. In her final year, in 2012, she took a trip with Habitat for Humanity to help those who were still struggling with the effects of Hurricane Katrina. The Israeli government reportedly commissioned a campaign in 2023 that included social media accounts targeting Black U.S. lawmakers. The New York Times reported that, in October 2023, Israel’s Ministry of Diaspora Affairs paid $2 million to Stoic, a Tel Aviv, Israel-based political marketing firm, to push pro-Israel content on social media at a time when many Americans were concerned for Palestinian civilians during the war in Gaza. The outlet details that Stoic created fake accounts in support of Israel across X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram that focused on over a dozen majority Black and Democrat U.S. lawmakers, including Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York and U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock of Georgia. ChatGPT was mainly used to create the fake accounts’ posts, which asked for the politicians to fund Israel’s military, per the outlet. Sixty-one-year-old Shirlene Ingraham continues to share delicious foods across Miami, FL. At the age of 7, Ingraham’s love for cooking began while she worked for her family’s business, the Miami Herald reports. Her parents, Jessie and Demas Jackson, were the proud owners of Jackson Soul Food. The first location was built in 1946 and was located in Miami’s Overtown neighborhood. When she became a young adult, Ingraham first pursed a career in criminology. However, she was not fulfilled when she moved back home to secure a job post. “My parents had a restaurant in Overtown since 1946. I went off to college in Gainesville at Santa Fe College to study criminology and then came back home,” Ingraham told the Miami Herald. “I started working in the Miami Police Department. From intern to running things! Amber Thomas is making Chick-Fil-A history as the owner of the chain’s first Black-owned restaurant in San Diego. With no desire to become an entrepreneur, Thomas hopes that her journey can inspire others to think outside of the box and go for the gold. “She wanted to be a physical therapist and she was adamant about that,” said her mother, Monica Hopkins in an interview with 10News. “She was like, ‘No, mom. I’m not going to be a Chick-fil-A owner,’ and then it just got in her blood. Her sister inspired her to be an owner and it went from there.”

Chick-fil-A has just announced that it will donate funds to various nonprofits across the nation that are either Black-led or serve communities of color. According to a press release, through the 2022 Chick-fil-A True Inspiration Awards grants, 34 organizations will receive a portion of the $5 million donation. “Despite the challenges these organizations have faced in the past few years, the 2022 grant recipients have demonstrated incredible passion, perseverance, and leadership as they have continued to enact meaningful change in their communities,” Chick-fil-A, Inc. Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility Rodney Bullard said in a statement. “We are inspired by the impact these organizations have on their communities every day, from providing essential items to those affected by Hurricane Ida, to enabling access to online education for students during the pandemic. Chick-fil-A has announced that it’s offering $5 million in grants for non-profit organizations. In a press release announcement, it was revealed that the popular True Inspiration Awards™ grant program has made its applications available, which you can download here.
