Forbes reports the highest paid actresses in 2018 made 24.8 cents for every dollar earned by male actors, and this equated to $186 million earned by the top 10 highest-paid female actors and $748.5 million compensated to the top 10 highest-paid male actors. No matter one’s background, they’re deserving of access to education. Currently, there are several Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) that share this sentiment and are taking initiative. A majority of formerly incarcerated people of color aren’t presented life fulfilling opportunities. Changing this circumstance, Parents reports that HBCUs nationwide are creating and investing in new prison-to-college education programs. The programs aim to “reduce recidivism and improve economic opportunities.” They help to teach skills needed to land jobs, become a business owner, and navigate life after prison. Overall, the mission is to support individuals in having a higher probability of successfully re-entering society. Sometimes there’s a thin line between work and real life. For one John Hopkins University professor, after teaching lessons to students about redlining, or the act of refusing a loan or insurance to someone because they live in an area deemed to be a “poor financial risk,” he is experiencing housing discrimination himself. Professor Nathan Connolly teaches the history of redlining in America by day. Unfortunately, by night, his own family has become the target of housing discrimination, according to a report from The New York Times. Although the professor and his wife Dr. Shani Mott were optimistic about the value of their home increasing after conducting renovations that totaled in the amount of $35,000, on top of another $5,000 for a new tankless water heater, the couple was met with an underwhelming offer.
The opportunities in Detroit, MI are about to be endless thanks to Apple and its latest move. In partnership with Michigan State University, the tech giant has officially opened the doors to its first US Developer Academy, where diverse developers and entrepreneurs will gain resources to positively impact their communities. As a first-of-its-kind facility, the Detroit Apple Developer Academy will be home to an inaugural class of over 100 students ages 18 to 60.
