Black Women Lead Efforts To Launch Digital Marketplace HellaBlack For Black Retailers

Last year, founders Layla Nielsen, Natalie Robinson and Love-leigh Trimiew announced plans to launch HellaBlack, a new e-commerce marketplace for Black retailers and enthusiasts — now the digital shopping platform is officially live. In an op-ed for Blavity, Trimiew previously wrote about how her family’s story and desire to own her historical narrative inspired her to start her own Black-owned business. “In the wake of George Floyd’s murder, there have been many important articles written about the history of Blacks being denied the opportunity to thrive economically — Wilmington, North Carolina, and Tulsa, Oklahoma are often cited,” she wrote. “A lot of Black thought-leaders have written think pieces about the necessity of Black economic empowerment. I am neither a philosopher, historian or expert in African-American studies. I am a Black woman business owner, the descendant of West African slaves and an East African immigrant, looking to my own historical narrative of hope amid...

Tabitha Brown Went Against Her Agent's Advice By Turning The Camera On Herself — And Became Everybody's Business

When Tabitha Brown asked the Most High for guidance about the direction for a potential acting career, she was surprised at the answer. The “mompreneur” and social media superstar had been trying for years to “make it” as an actress, and had some nominal success — but her agent had advised her against turning the camera on herself. “I wanted to be taken seriously as an actress,” she told AfroTech exclusively. “So, I listened to my agent when she said not to record things for YouTube, for Instagram, for any social media. I wanted to do stand-up — I wanted a TV show — and, honestly, I just felt stuck. So, I prayed about it, and I said to God, ‘I will do whatever you want me to do.’ Then, my daughter told me about this thing called TikTok. She said, ‘Mama, why don’t you start doing some videos?'” This was in March 2020 — the beginning of what would be known as “quarantine” to stop the spread of COVID-19. So, against her agent’s advice, Tabitha Brown turned the camera onto herself —...

Sterling Smith Helps Black Founders Launch E-Commerce Apps In Less Than 10 Minutes

As we look toward the future of retail for Black founders many questions come to mind. What do retailers want? How can they be successful? For founders like Sterling Smith, the answer is simple. “Retailers want freedom,” he tells Will Lucas on the latest episode of the Black Tech Green Money podcast. “Retailers want flexibility and they want the ability to say ‘hey, I’m with Shopify one day but it isn’t allowing me to service my customers in this way, using this third-party integration partner so let me go to BitCommerce. They also want minimum to zero lag time and downtime.” He also explains that retailers also want to be able to not only complete transactions with their customers but also want to be able to leverage the data and own their customer data. “Technologies like Sandbox Commerce allows for growing brands and retailers to do just that in the same way that larger brands snd retailers that you may find in stores like Nordstroms are doing,” continued Smith.   View this post...

This Nurse Created A Lactation Subscription Service For Black Mothers

Contrary to popular opinion, lactation isn’t something that always comes easy (or naturally) for mothers. That’s why Shamiesha Ebhotemen created a lactation subscription service for Black mothers . The NurseMilk Latch Baby Latch is designed to “erase the stigma of breastfeeding.” And while breastfeeding has become more accepted as time goes on, there are still plenty of women that could use all the help they could get. With the Liquid Gold subscription, expectant mothers receive a support assessment, 1-on-1 classes, group classes, free merchandise, and weekly emails — and that’s just the beginning. According to Nurses You Should Know, Ebhtomen realized that it was important to her to create this lactation subscription service for mothers because her experience in both the medical field and as a mother made her realize that she needed to fill a void. “During her pregnancy, Shamiesha began searching for a lactation consultant of color in her neighborhood. She was only able to locate...
