HillmanTok University has made its way from TikTok to Capitol Hill. On March 11, 2025, the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) joined forces with TikTok to celebrate the digital community for Black educators using the social media platform to reshape education and inspire approximately 135.79 million U.S. users. Travis Scott has launched a new program that will fuel the design and creativity of students. In 2020, the rapper and songwriter extended his impact in his hometown of Houston, TX, by launching the Cactus Jack Foundation in November 2020, providing the next generation with educational and creative resources, Variety notes. One year after its inception, the foundation launched the 60,000-square-foot Cact.us Design Center at TXRX Labs, serving at-risk middle and high school students. Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) were founded to offer Black students the opportunity to pursue higher education. They werenât admitted into primarily white institutions, causing HBCUs to not only become a resource for education but a safe space. To this day, Black students, non-Black students of color and white students attend HBCUs for the purpose of advancing their studies and expanding their cultural awareness. Through donations and some government funding , HBCUs continue to make this possible for their student body. As grants and loans are offered, so are university scholarships. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon has revealed his thoughts amid the ever-changing landscape of workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices. A first-of-its-kind partnership is set to open the door for a group of HBCU student-athletes. According to a press release, North Carolina Central University (NCCU) has become the first HBCU to partner with The Brandr Group (TBG) â a brand management, marketing, and licensing agency â for its group licensing program. Raising $4.25 million, co-founders Jasmine Shells and Denise Umubyeyi are two of 250 Black women to raise more than $1 million in venture capital. According to a press release shared with AfroTech, their software company Five to Nine closed a seed round led by Black Ops Ventures with participation from Slack Fund and Cleveland Avenue. To date, Five to Nine has raised $5.75 million with the help of recurrent investors such as Mike Gamson, Sterling Road, and Concrete Rose Capital. The funding will expand its product and engineering teams, strengthen its sales capabilities, and launch new customer solutions.
Black History Month is starting off right with the latest funding coming in for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The Grio reports that 27 HBCUs have been awarded $20 million in faculty research grants and scholarships from the Thurgood Marshall College Fund-Novartis US Foundation HBCU Alliance. The funding for faculty research grants stems from the collaborative effort that launched in 2021 as a 10-year initiative aiming to âachieve a paradigm shift over time to address longstanding, endemic, and historically based disparities.â According to the outlet, the grants will be distributed in an effort to help improve health disparities within the Black community.
The National Basketball Association (NBA) is giving back bigger than ever to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). All 107 HBCUs will receive support to advance opportunities, according to the NBAâs website.
