Publisher Seko Varner is making connecting with Black-owned businesses in the Hampton Roads area easier than ever. Varner, a multifaceted leader who serves as president and financial consultant for the entertainment and consulting company Positive Vibes Inc., has introduced The Hampton Roads Greenbook, a directory that spotlights and supports Black-owned businesses in the region. The Hampton Roads Greenbook was inspired by Victor Hugo Green’s Negro Travelers’ Green Book. Green, a postal carrier in Harlem, originally created the guide to help Black travelers navigate safely during segregation. Green’s original guide served as a crucial resource for Black travelers during the Jim Crow era, listing businesses, restaurants , gas stations, and lodging where individuals could safely stop without facing discrimination, the National Park Service reports. As The WNBA's First Textured Hair Care Partner, Mielle Organics Extends Support To Women's Basketball By Pledging $300K To Hampton University

Mielle Organics will be providing scholarships and more to Hampton University’s female athletes. According to a news release, Mielle Organics, led by Monique Rodriguez (founder and CEO), and Hampton Athletics have cemented a multi-year partnership with the Historically Black College and University (HBCU) for its women’s basketball team. “We are honored to partner with Mielle,” Tamisha Augustin, Hampton women’s basketball head coach, expressed in a news release . “Mielle is an innovator in textured hair products and care. Although President Joe Biden announced an extension to pause federal student loan payments through August 31, current students at Hampton University are getting additional relief toward their college expenses. In a recent announcement , Hampton University President, Dr. William R. Harvey, announced that the HBCU will not increase tuition, student fees, or room and board for the upcoming academic year. The PSEG Foundation — the philanthropic arm of Public Service Enterprise Group Inc. which prioritizes investments in environment, safety, STEM education & workforce development and diversity & inclusion — has announced plans to provide $1 million in grant funding for three esteemed HBCUs to support STEM education. Recipients of this grant funding are Hampton University, Howard University and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Hampton University Awarded $17.7M Grant For Workforce Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center

Hampton University was recently awarded $17.7 million as a recipient of The Reimagine Workforce Preparation Grant Program. In collaboration with the Virginia Board of Workforce Development and Old Dominion University, the historically Black institution will use the funding to establish the Virginia Workforce Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center. It will serve as an incubator for aspiring entrepreneurs with hopes of it growing the city’s economy. “Hampton’s proposal is especially promising,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos, who visited the campus last week. “This program is for all students of all ages, especially adult learners seeking new knowledge and skills to grow their own businesses. After developing an app to solve a real-world problem in 36-hours, four Hampton University students won first place in the Tech Challenge and third place overall at the Black Enterprise Smart Hackathon. Ernest “Xavier” Horton, Coleman Scott IV, Tauren Bass, and Jeffrey Grant, were the computer science students who participated in the hackathon at the TechConneXt—an annual tech summit in Silicon Valley — competing against 15 other HBCU teams to create a unique app designed to address real business needs. “The hackathon itself was exhausting, but we learned a lot of new technologies that we had not used before,” said Horton, college junior and two-time Google intern, in a news release . “We were able to utilize our skills and knowledge acquired at Hampton in different ways to meet the challenges that were presented to us.” The final product was judged on viability, user-friendliness, and platform effectiveness. Four Hampton University students have launched Generators Incorporated, a company that aims to address gentrification and issues related to energy efficiency through repurposed NASA technology. The team—comprised of three alumni and one current student—developed the plan to innovate the collection of solar energy after their professor, Dr. Oliver Jones chose them to compete in the Technology Implementation Market Engine (T.I.M.E.) Challenge hosted by the Institute for Local Innovations. The T.I.M.E. According to a press release shared with AFROTECH™, Zeal Capital Partners, a Washington, DC-based venture capital firm founded by Nasir Qadree, has secured new funding that will go towards opportunities in financial technology, health care, and the future of learning and work. The firm has secured $82 million for its Zeal Fund II, which brings its overall managed assets to $186 million.
