Frito-Lay — the iconic manufacturer of such popular snack chips as Cheetos, Ruffles, and Doritos — has joined the effort for STEM diversity. In a press release announcement, it was revealed that the chip manufacturer is going to sponsor 50 girls to go to Space Camp for the next five years. Additionally, the chip manufacturer also made a donation of $150,000 to establish the “Space for Her” Scholarship fund which will finance the tuition for the camp. An additional bonus provided in the fund is the “Space for Her-os” mentorship program, which will offer coaching and guidance on different career paths in the science and tech sector. Frito-Lay has partnered with the National Urban League and UnidosUS to select Black and LatinX girls for the inaugural Space Camp class. Young female learners will be encouraged to dream big because of a newly formed partnership between Frito-Lay Variety Packs, science-fiction star Sonequa Martin-Green, and STEM Next’s Million Girls Moonshot. According to a press release, the shared commitment will make STEM learning opportunities accessible to young girls through the Back-to-School Blast Off program. Martin-Green hopes her presence will encourage the next generation to evolve their interests in STEM. “Representation matters and sometimes, all it takes to inspire us to achieve something is to see someone we can relate to doing it first,” said Martin-Green, according to a press release. “I’m honored for the opportunity to join Frito-Lay Variety Packs in their mission to inspire talented young girls everywhere to develop their passions for STEM and pursue their dreams.”
Andy Muir will be sporting a new hat as Skims’ new chief financial officer. Women’s Wear Daily reports the former vice president and chief financial officer of the Jordan Brand will lead inclusivity efforts and spearhead Skims’ growth and financial agendas, as it plans to expand globally. Muir’s presence is timely, as the swimwear and innerwear company, created by Kim Kardashian and Jens Grede, is set to reach new markets, launch new categories, and open brick-and-mortar Skims stores. Graduate researcher Lindsay Davis made history as the first African American student to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry at The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), according to a press release. “It feels good to be a trailblazer,” Lindsay Davis shared in a UTA press release. “I am proud to set an example for underrepresented minorities who dream of using their STEM talents to make the world a better place.” Davis’ involvement in STEM research centers on treatments for tuberculosis (TB), an infectious disease commonly impacting the lungs. “We want to understand on a molecular level how FGD operates, since it is the target for further drug development for multiple drug-resistant forms of TB,” Davis revealed in a UTA press release. “Once we discover the mode of action of FGD, researchers can create treatments that more effectively target the enzyme and cure patients with drug-resistant strains of TB.” Davis’ extensive research has propelled mentorship opportunities for two women of color,...

Doritos has announced a new financially-backed initiative that’s all about amplifying Black joy, strength and resilience in our community. As part of its 2020 #AmplifyBlackVoices work, a press release reports that Doritos is now launching and funding SOLID BLACK™ — a new multi-platform initiative that’s dedicated to uplifting the voices of Black innovators and creators today. Massachusetts-based science technology company Synlogic has announced, today, that Lisa Kelly-Croswell has been appointed to their board of directors. In a press release announcement, the company confirmed that Ms. Kelly-Croswell is joining the board in what the company is calling a “growth stage.” While the immediate details about this growth haven’t been made clear, what is clear is that Synlogic’s focus will be on its proprietary technologies, including those that treat metabolic disorders like Phenylketonuria (PKU) and Enteric Hyperoxaluria (HOX).
