In 2019, FanDuel Said Drake Had A Sports Curse — But His $1M Winning Bet On Golden State Warriors May Say Otherwise

Drake may be the “Certified Lover Boy,” but his success in that area didn’t always translate as it relates to his sports. Popular sports gaming site, FanDuel, even went so far as to document Drake’s luck with supporting his teams in 2019. However, they haven’t been the only ones. With so much bad luck, fans and sports analysts alike have deemed his bad streak the “Drake curse.” Now, it’s safe to say that curse may be a thing of the past — especially with Drake supporting the Golden State Warriors during their Western Conference finals run.

FanDuel Among Approved Nine Mobile Sports Operators In New York — Jay-Z-Backed Fanatics Out

Jay-Z may no longer be in a New York state of mind. As AfroTech previously reported, the billionaire business mogul made a move to open a New York sportsbook in partnership with sports e-retailer Fanatics, making a bid with the New York State Gaming Commission back in August 2021. Now, according to 1010 WINS, the state’s gambling commission has approved nine mobile sports betting operators for the state, but neither Jay-Z-backed Fanatics nor Barstool Sports’ Penn Sports Interactive was recommended for a vote by the state. Thomas DiNapoli, the State’s comptroller, said that he estimates mobile sports gambling could bring in an excess of $500 million by 2025 to the state. But, it should be noted, the nine companies that were approved — including DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetMGM — have agreed to pay a tax rate of 51 percent to the state of New York to operate their companies in the state. So, perhaps this can be considered a “blessing in disguise” of sorts. Casinos and mobile companies...

FanDuel and the Washington Football Team are giving back to HBCU students big time! On the heels of their mobile sports betting market partnership, FanDuel Group and the Washington Football Team have announced a $1 million contribution to the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), reports PR Newswire. As an extension of its legal sports betting partnership in the state, both FanDuel and the Washington Football Team will provide the contribution to continue celebrating Black History Month as it comes to an end. “Supporting these institutions and these hard-working students, amidst enormous challenges related to COVID, is the right...

Lil Wayne Gave His First Paycheck Of $6,500 To His Mom, But She Gave It Back — So, The Multi-Millionaire Did This Instead

Owning your first car is a great feeling. From the sense of independence to the flexing you’re able to do on your friends, having reliable transportation can be both a privilege and a necessity. Many people have their first car experience in their teens, and Cash Money legend Lil Wayne was no different. At the start of his career, when he was figuring it all out and adapting to fame, Wayne allegedly took his first check and bought himself a car. But it wasn’t that simple. Born Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., the Louisiana rapper entered the game when he was only 14-years-old. During the initial phase of his rap career, Carter was a part of the popular rap group The Hot Boys. The group — comprised of himself, B.G, Juvenile, and Turk — was officially formed in 1997 and produced songs like “We On Fire” and “I Need A Hot Girl.” Wayne would go on to release his first solo album in 1999, “Tha Block Is Hot.” It would peek on the Billboard 200 at the No. 3 spot and become certified platinum. The...

Jay-Z Reportedly Just Made A Move To Open A Sportsbook In His Home State Of New York

When it comes to his latest investment, Jay-Z is betting it all and getting in on the sports gambling action. Page six reports that the billionaire business mogul is making a move to open a New York sportsbook in partnership with sports e-retailer Fanatics and has already made a bid with the New York State Gaming Commission. Documents show that both Jay-Z and the Fanatics group are bidding against some stiff competition that includes companies like FanDuel, DraftKings, Bally’s, BetMGM and Caesars Sportsbook. Additionally, the outlet reports that the new move will also reportedly have Jay-Z serve as vice chairman of Fanatics as well as on the board of directors of a new Fanatics Betting & Gaming entity. In association with the current bids, the rapper’s role as an executive was revealed in redacted documents released by the New York State Gaming Commission last week, but his name as a potential license holder was reportedly blocked out. Those same documents are also said to have...
