Living a plant-based lifestyle is becoming more popular and Violife’s new program — backed by Wu Tang’s RZA — is set to help the growing community. While the plant-based market grows, Black-owned restaurants have hit losses during the pandemic. According to a press release, Violife launched its annual Plant Grants program to “help these restaurants give everyone – vegans, flexitarians, and the plant curious alike – an easy and inspired way to eat more plant-based food every day.” The vegan cheese brand selected five recipients to receive funding of $20,000 each. “With the 2021 Plant Grants program, we’re tackling plant-based food inequity head on by empowering Black-owned restaurants to offer more plant-based dishes to their communities – dishes that will delight customers and keep them coming back for more,” Lisa Akey , Head of Away from Home Marketing for Violife said in a statement. A new vegan bakery is headed to Washington, D.C. this weekend! Chanice McClover-Lee launched Baked by Chanice at farmer’s markets in her hometown of South Florida in response to the pandemic. Now the 19-year-old Howard University student is taking her business talents to a food hall and commercial kitchen in D.C.’s Brookland neighborhood, VegOut reports. “What started as a quarantine hobby last March quickly, and unintentionally transformed into a successful business,” McClover-Lee shared with AfroTech. “I began having bake sales on the weekends where people would place orders to be picked up from my house and I would sell out of hundreds of cookies at farmer’s markets. As the faux meat industry continues to boom, Daring Foods Inc., has managed to raise $40 million from investors just a little over a year after its plant-based chicken debuted last year, reports Bloomberg Green. The series B funding round was led by D1 Capital Partners along with existing investors such as Palm Tree Crew and Maveron.
