Apple is on a mission to end child pornography through this new tool. Gizmodo reports that although the tech company’s goal to crack down on child pornography seems like a great idea, it could very well be misused. The tool will use a “neural matching function” called NeuralHash which can determine if photos on a person’s device match known child sexual abuse material (CSAM) fingerprints. Security experts like Matthew Green say that the tool is a disaster waiting to happen. “I’ve had independent confirmation from multiple people that Apple is releasing a client-side tool for CSAM scanning tomorrow. This is a really bad idea,” said Green via Twitter. “These tools will allow Apple to scan your iPhone photos for photos that match a specific perceptual hash, and report them to Apple servers if too many appear.” Green, an associate professor at Johns Hopkins Information Security Institute, has both studied and written privacy methods for Apple throughout the years. He has also previously...

In recent years, brilliant innovations in technology have occurred on account of diverse techies putting themselves in a position to bring their creative ideas to life. While there are many inventions that stem from people in STEM-focused fields, the reality is that these revolutionary technologies can come from any wide range of perspectives and people that come from all walks of life. Though Silicon Valley has been called out for its failure to diversify its workforces, Black and brown technicians and app developers around the world aren’t letting that stop them from creating their own seat at the table. Take for instance Apple’s recent efforts to boost diversity in tech as a result of its $100 million Racial Equity and Justice Initiative. These efforts include creating programs that aim to address issues of racial equity in education, employment and economic inequality. Moreover, bold initiatives like this have created opportunities for diverse, self-taught app developers to be...

Apple has launched an app development program with women founders–specifically women of color in mind. Although the company has previously held workshops, talks, and accelerators, this is the first program focused on women-founded companies. Starting in January, Women will be able to receive support through Apple’s new Entrepreneur Camp. The two-week camp will offer one-on-one coding assistance from Apple engineers plus design, technology, and App Store marketing sessions. Inclusive of all who identify as women, participation requires the company to be founded, co-founded or led by women. Companies can also have at least one woman on the development team. “We wanted to focus on women who already have an app-driven business, and we don’t require them to have an iOS app,” Apple Senior Director of Worldwide Developer Marketing Esther Hare told TechCrunch . “This isn’t an incubator where you come with a good idea and we help you think through it. It’s about already having a good idea,...
