Employers Liability Insurance: What It Is And Why It's Necessary

Employers’ liability insurance is a crucial type of business insurance designed to protect employers from financial loss if an employee sues for a work-related injury or illness. While workers’ compensation insurance typically covers medical expenses and lost wages for injured employees, employers’ liability insurance provides coverage when an employee alleges that negligence or unsafe practices by the employer directly contributed to their injury or illness. This insurance safeguards businesses against potentially devastating lawsuits, ensuring that employers can manage legal and financial risks effectively. How Employers’ Liability Insurance Works Employers ’ liability insurance comes into play when an employee believes their injury or illness resulted from the employer’s negligence and chooses to file a lawsuit rather than rely solely on workers’ compensation benefits. For example, an employee might claim the employer failed to provide adequate safety training, leading to an...

AfroTech Invites Employers To Tap Into Its New Platform, Talent Infusion To Recruit Top Diverse Job Candidates

Representation matters. From the election of the 44 th President Barack Obama to the almost cult following of the original “Black Panther” portrayed by the late Chadwick Boseman – there is something special about someone who looks like you in spaces that have historically been void. This perspective becomes increasingly more valuable regarding job and work cultures. As people of color navigate corporate and public-sector spaces for employment, one value at the top of most people’s list is a culture of inclusion and diversity. Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) strategies are being employed across several sectors. Companies are making efforts to ensure their space is more in line with the representation that exists in the world. However, with the importance of equitable spaces at the forefront, HR leaders are tasked with recruiting and retaining qualified diverse talent that meets their DEI goals and provides varied influence and critical perspectives to their organizations....

How Employees And Employers Benefit By Listing Salaries In Job Descriptions

“Honesty is the best policy.” This is a phrase many people have used or lived by. Those interested in jumping into the often tumultuous space of job hunting come to the table with a list of requirements that’s best for them.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by AFROTECH (@afro.tech) And while everyone may have different priorities around what would make a job relationship ideal, nearly everyone wants to earn a livable wage that supports their lifestyle and affirms their value. This process can be problematic for both the employer and the employee. It doesn’t have to be this way. Both entities can benefit from salary transparency. Here’s...

Why Employee Resource Groups Are A Win-Win For Black Professionals And Their Employers

Have you ever felt slightly reserved during your first day at a new job? You quietly take in many of the elements of the new environment and mentally observe the vibes of the people that come with it. At some point, an opportunity presents itself for you and your colleagues to come together. There are a few options for groups to engage with, and with very little thought, you choose the group you assume you have the most in common with. This process is the power of culture and acknowledgment of community. According to Medical News Today, people desire to be in community. It is explained as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Despite how overt many people are in avoiding human interaction, Maslow’s theory suggests there’s an innate sense of belonging that people crave. At this intersection, many corporations create programming around these human needs through employee resource groups (ERGs).

Rowe Price has been implementing a “test and learn” technique . For example, to help employees feel more comfortable seeking out talk therapy, the firm offered a therapist’s services for 8 hours a week in an office. After a successful test run,...

It's Now Illegal For Employers To Contact Remote Workers Outside Of Their Hours In Portugal

The pandemic has shifted the new normal for everyone around the world. We witnessed c ountless companies shift to a remote lifestyle to ensure employees would be better protected from contracting the virus. However, creating the separation between work life and home can become cumbersome when employers fail to create boundaries. According to researchers, some workers feel as if the workday no longer has a stopping point and their weekdays and weekends have no distinction. For workers with children, tending to their children was cited as the largest distraction to fulfilling their remote responsibilities. Fortunately, Portugal is stepping up implementing new protocols to help remote workers, sending a message to the world that etiquette work practices are possible and essential to helping employees thrive under the new normal. According to Euronews, Portugal’s new labor laws were approved by the country’s parliament on Friday, Nov. 5. “The pandemic has accelerated the need to...

With stay-at-home orders and quarantine still in place for coming up on a year, the streaming giant held a media roundtable to discuss how they’re implementing new strategies for their Spotifiers (current employees). Work From Anywhere is a distributed-first mentality that will give employees the opportunity to elect whether they’d prefer to work mostly at home or in the office — called their Work Mode — along with their geographic location. Proposed PSLF Rule Could Strip Loan Forgiveness From Public Workers Serving Marginalized Communities

President Donald Trump’s administration is moving to overhaul the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. The proposed changes, according to ABC News, could block debt relief for thousands of public and nonprofit workers, including those who work for organizations supporting immigrant communities, transgender youth, and diversity and inclusion efforts. The Department of Education’s draft rule would allow officials to disqualify entire organizations from PSLF if they’re involved in so-called “illegal activities” the department has defined. Critics argue that the vague language used could become a political tool, particularly against groups focused on equity, identity, or civil rights. “That’s definitely an indicator for me that this is politically motivated and perhaps will be used as a tool for political punishment,” Betsy Mayotte, president of the Institute of Student Loan Advisors and reviewer of the rule, said in an interview with ABC News. What PSLF Was Designed To Do...

Op-Ed: I Don’t Think Studying Computer Science Leads To A Stable Career

Editorial Note: Opinions and thoughts are the author’s own and not those of AFROTECH™. Learning how to code has been centered as the most probable path to prosperity since Mark Zuckerberg rang the bell as Facebook went public in 2012. After the success of Zuckerberg and Meta , being able to learn how to code was marketed by the public and private sectors as a path to not only financial stability but also outsized prosperity. The number of computer science graduates has more than doubled over the past decade from 51,696 to 112,720 when comparing the 2013-2014 academic year to the 2022-2023 academic year, according to the National Student Clearing House, a nonprofit organization that serves as the central source for educational reporting, verification and research across the U.S. The increased focus on computer science makes sense when you learn that computer science graduates also have an average starting salary of $77,000, while the average recent graduate is $68,400, according to...

Avelis Health, An AI-Powered Company Helping Patients Lower Their Medical Bills, Secures $500K Pre-Seed Investment From Y Combinator

These founders are leaning into AI to help patients combat their medical bills. Avelis Health Founded in February 2025 by Angel Onuoha (CEO) and Ahmad Shehu (chief technology officer), Avelis Health employs AI agents to find errors, audit, and negotiate medical bills, which can help lead to direct savings as well as prevent rising premiums and less favorable coverage. Onuoha shares that its inception derived from an injury that left him with piling medical debt. “I’ve dealt with a chronic knee injury for the past decade and had multiple surgeries on my right knee. What inspired me to start Avelis was having to fight down over $250K of inflated hospital bills as a result of these procedures,” he mentioned in an email to AFROTECH™. “If I was struggling with this system, I knew millions of other Americans were facing the same problem without the resources to fight back. The medical billing system is broken, 100 million Americans have medical debt, and 50-80% of bills have errors in...
