President Donald Trump Looks To Dismantle Department Of Education

The Trump administration is reportedly looking to dismantle the Department of Education. According to CNN, sources close to the matter stated an executive order is in the works. President Donald Trump’s intentions were present in Project 2025, which is a list of proposals across 900 pages that imposes a conservative agenda, BBC mentions. It was created by the Heritage Foundation, a right-wing think tank, and is supported by more than 100 organizations with a mission “to take down the Deep State and return the government to the people” through policy, personnel, and training, its website notes. Within the lengthy proposal, it states the closing of the Department of Education. NPR reports Betsy DeVos suggested during Trump’s first term, while she served as the Secretary of Education, that the department should reinvest money benefiting lower income students through the Title I program and instead allocate it towards grants proposed in Project 2025. This signals that the closure of the...

Ne’Kiya Jackson And Calcea Johnson Find 9 More Ways To Solve Pythagoras' Theorem After Already Making A Discovery That Was Unproven For 2,000 Years

The bright minds of Ne’Kiya Jackson and Calcea Johnson have accomplished a new feat! As AFROTECH™ previously reported, the duo made headlines in 2023 for proving the Pythagorean Theorem without circular logic. The theorem had not yet been proven by mathematicians in more than 2,000 years. “Calcea and Ne’Kiya explained it to me like this: Basically, trigonometry is based on Pythagoras’ Theorem (A^2 + B^2 = C^2, sound familiar?), so using trigonometry to prove Pythagoras’s Theorem is what’s known as circular logic,” a WWL-TV reporter said at the time. Their discovery occurred during a school math contest created by the pair’s high school math teacher, Mr. Rich, at St. Mary’s Academy, in New Orleans, LA, an academic paper states. The contest included a $500 prize. “There was a bonus question that was to create a new proof of the Pythagorean Theorem,” Johnson told PEOPLE. “Ne’Kiya and I were the only two to do the bonus question in the whole school.” They presented their results to the...

Biden Administration To Pay $2.2B To Black Farmers Who Had Been Discriminated Against By The US Department Of Agriculture

Direct payouts from the Biden administration will be allocated to Black farmers who have faced discrimination. ABC News reports Black farmers acknowledge that they have been discriminated against by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) when it comes to loans. The outlet notes many had been denied loans or received loans that were less than their white counterparts. Some that did receive loans had even reported having their property foreclosed on sooner than was typical when they experienced issues paying. Denial was the case for Wardell Carter, whose family has owned 85 acres of land in Mississippi since 1939. Yet despite their longevity, they have never been able to access a loan application. Instead, they were greeted by USDA loan officers with a slammed door, and if they persisted they were faced with the reality of having a cop called to their home, he says. Due to these challenges, it prevented the family from purchasing a tractor for years. So, they had to rely on a horse...

Whoopi Goldberg Honored For Launching First Branded, Tested Woman-Owned Cannabis Brand In California

Whoopi Goldberg is being honored. The veteran-actress-turned-television-host has received the Key to West Hollywood! The honor was a result of her commitment to the LGBTQIA+ community and for her work as an entrepreneur, owning the first branded and tested woman-owned cannabis brand in California, Gold Derby reports. Goldberg’s foray into cannabis dates back to 2016. As AFROTECH™ previously reported, she launched Whoopi & Maya alongside co-founder Maya Elisabeth of Om. The company existed to provide medical cannabis to those experiencing menstrual pain, according to CNN. However, that company shut down in 2020 following a string of conflicts. “They wanted to include menstrual cramps in the list of things you can prescribe medical marijuana for but the governor said that will never happen in New Jersey because our doctors only prescribe marijuana for ‘real’ pain,” Goldberg said in an interview with The Cannabist at the time. “The fact that people think of (women’s health) as a niche...

Fearless Fund Barred From Providing Grant Funding To Black Women Entrepreneurs

Fearless Fund has been barred temporarily from providing funding to Black entrepreneurs. As AFROTECH™ previously reported, the venture capital fund had been sued by Edward Blum and his American Alliance for Equal Rights group in August 2023 for “explicit racial exclusion” by creating a grant program dedicated solely to Black women, The Washington Post shares. Initially, U.S. District Judge Thomas W. Thrash had ruled in favor of Fearless Fund, but the verdict was blocked by a panel on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit on Sept. 30, 2023. Fearless Fund, looking to retract the verdict, filed to appeal the September ruling. In the most recent update, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit has temporarily blocked Fearless Fund from continuing its efforts to support Black women entrepreneurs with funding, CNN reports . The panel judges ruled the Fearless Fund’s Fearless Strivers Grant Contest is “substantially likely to violate” Title 42 of the US Code’s provisions,...

Dwyane Wade Shares How Long It Took Him To Learn How To Manage His NBA Earnings As Someone Who 'Never Really Handled More Than $500 At A Time'

Money management can be a learning curve for many athletes, and this was the case for Dwyane Wade. Wade was drafted to the league in 2003, which is viewed as “one of the greatest draft classes in NBA history,” the league mentions. LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, and Chris Bosh were also drafted that year. Wade would make his debut with the Miami Heat as the No. 5 overall draft pick, Sports Illustrated reports. He then signed a three-year contract valued at $8.5 million, to The Palm Beach Post. For Wade, being drafted to the league allowed him to overcome the odds that were stacked against him living in the South Side of Chicago, where he would hear gun shots frequently. At one point, he was being raised by his mother who struggled with addiction and would leave him at home for periods of time, according to Business Insider. When he was 9 he eventually moved to a new neighborhood to be with his father, who had divorced his mother. “[My father] was militant,” Wade shared during an...

Google is Restructuring its AI Teams, But it Needs to be Focusing on its Diversity and Inclusion Efforts

Google has been investing a lot of its focus into artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in the past few years, but it’s falling short on the management level to bring its ideas to fruition. The company claims to be “advancing AI for everyone,” yet it can’t seem to get the diversity and inclusion aspect of this down. “At its heart, AI is computer programming that learns and adapts. It can’t solve every problem, but its potential to improve our lives is profound,” Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said in a blog post . “At Google, we use AI to make products more useful—from email that’s spam-free and easier to compose , to a digital assistant you can speak to naturally , to photos that pop the fun stuff out for you to enjoy.” Despite its seemingly good intentions to break more into AI, Google employees have been very critical about the company’s AI investments from the start. Back in June 2018, according to Forbes, more than 3,000 employees signed a petition in protest against...

According to Business Insider, CottonTale united Chance the Rapper, singer and actress, Cynthia Erivo, the Chicago Children’s Choir, and over 80 Black artists, engineers, producers, and managers to bring the song, titled “Together,” to life. “Trying to make a sound that culminates 2020 … was honestly way too sad,” CottonTale told Insider of the song that premiered in early December. “Because for a lot of people [the year 2020] sounded like loss, or it sounded like a lot of challenges in their personal lives.” Though a rough year for all, CottonTale’s goal was to narrate 2020 through the perspective of the Black community while bringing light to Black creatives.
