Meet the Black Women Politicians Making Strides for the Black Community

For the first time in American politics, we are seeing a plethora of Black women rise and carve their own paths as powerful politicians. Kamala Harris, though her presidential race was cut short, helped start a conversation about Black women candidates who are leading the charge for their peers and aspiring politicians to make a real impact. “She broke a glass ceiling for women of color,” said Rep. Karen Bass to The New York Times in regards to Harris’ race. According to her, “there will be more African-American women running in the next presidential race. Maybe it will even be Kamala herself.” Harris and many others of her stature have made great strides for Black women in politics. The list below spotlights a handful of those Black women who are making noise in the political realm. Rep. Val Demings Photo Credit: Brian Stukes/Getty Images Florida Rep. Facebook Settles Historic Civil Rights Lawsuit Alleging Discriminatory Ad Practices

Facebook has settled a civil rights lawsuit that alleged the company participated in discriminatory ad practices. Facebook’s ad targeting system allows companies to exclude certain groups from seeing ads for things like housing and jobs. The settlement will require the company to essentially overhaul it’s ad system, which is its major money maker. Within that space, Facebook will get rid of targeted advertisement that allowed people to target ads based on age, gender, and options associated with “protected characteristics or groups” according to the ACLU . People won’t be able to target ads based on a ZIP code or geographic area that’s less than a 15-mile radius. And, when developing “Lookalike” audiences for advertisers, Facebook will stop...

Black lawmakers to meet with Apple, Paypal, Airbnb and more about their workplace diversity

Lawmakers in the Congressional Black Caucus are headed back to Silicon Valley this week to check in on the progress that tech companies have made since Tech2020 was created in 2015. Tech2020 was launched in order to “bring together the best minds in the tech, non-profit, education and public sectors to chart a path forward to increase African American inclusion at all levels of the technology industry.” Unfortunately, major companies like Google have seen little to no growth in the number of black employees in the past few years. Apple has seen a rise to 9 percent black employees — but it’s clear to see these movements are small and slow-growing. With their upcoming visit to Silicon Valley, the Congressional Black Caucus aims to ensure progress is being made and that black people in tech are able to grow and build their way to success. They plan to meet with companies including Apple, Paypal and Square — companies that identify at least 6 percent of their employees as black — in...
