Is Google Cracking Down on Internal Dissent? Their New Guidelines May Suggest it

Organizing against your employer is hard, but Google workers have taken up the charge for years. After embracing dissenting views and outspokenness from its employees for so long, it seems as though Google may be growing tired of internal protests. Recently, Google updated its guidelines to warn employees against holding political debates and improperly disclosing company information. A section of the new guidelines say:   “While sharing information and ideas with colleagues helps build community, disrupting the workday to have a raging debate over politics or the latest news story does not. YouTube is Revamping Its Strike System

YouTube hasn’t always been the best at implementing consistent penalties through its strike system, but the platform is now moving towards increased transparency and change. In an announcement, YouTube shared a big change in its system. In the past, YouTube used a three strike policy, with each strike having a different penalty. Now, YouTube’s introducing a consistent penalty for each strike. The strike system comes into play when YouTube’s reviewers say a video has violated the site’s Community Guidelines . That can apply to videos containing violent or graphic content, hateful content, threats, scams, nudity or sexual content, and more. Under the improved system, YouTube said the first strike will result in a one-week freeze from any type of activity, expiring after 90 days. The second strike in any 90-day period results in a two-week freeze on the ability to upload videos. After the third strike in any 90-day period, the channel will be terminated. YouTube has been criticized for...

YouTube Says It Will No Longer Recommend Conspiracy Videos

Conspiracy videos make up their own niche section of YouTube and have long been noted as potentially promoting “harmful” misinformation.  In a move to clean up the site, YouTube says it will no longer recommend conspiracy videos to users. In a Jan. 25 blog post , YouTube wrote, “We’ll begin reducing recommendations of borderline content and content that could misinform users in harmful ways—such as videos promoting a phony miracle cure for a serious illness, claiming the earth is flat, or making blatantly false claims about historic events like 9/11.” Guillaume Chaslot, a former engineer for Google, YouTube’s parent company, called the move a “historic victory” . In a thread of tweets, Chaslot said, “It’s only the beginning of a more humane technology. Technology that empowers all of us, instead of deceiving the most vulnerable.” The affected videos will be those YouTube identifies as coming close to violating its community guidelines , without actually crossing that line. According...
