Hearing of wedded couples giving back to their alma maters is always a heartwarming story. It pulls on one’s heartstrings, even more, when the school is where the lovebirds both met and married. This beautiful order of events is the love story of Drs. Toni and David Wilkes, who are now paying it forward to the Lewis Katz School of Medicine — Temple University’s medical school. According to Temple Health News, the 1982 graduates have donated $2 million to the school. The intent behind their gift is to establish an endowed scholarship fund for students underrepresented in medicine. “There’s deep purpose in this scholarship, ” said Dr. Toni Wilkes. “In addition to what it means to us, it’s a thank-you to Temple for giving us a superb education.” Dr. David Wilkes added: “Our scholarship is an enactment of principles and priorities that we — and Temple — prize.”
Pharrell Williams wants to see more wins for Black-owned businesses. Pharrell Williams presented the keynote speech at the Urban League of Hampton Roads’ (ULHR) annual Martin Luther King, Jr. awards program on Monday (Jan. 17). A new face will be joining Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Clark Atlanta University to inspire the next generation of Black entrepreneurs. Hollywood veteran Keshia Knight Pulliam — most recognized for her roles on “The Cosby Show” and “Tyler Perry House of Payne” — will become the newest partner of Now and Later® candy as a part of its #RecognizeTheChew Class in Session series. “I look forward to partnering with Now and Later on this program and sharing my personal and professional experience with the #RecognizeTheChew Class in Session students,” Pulliam said in a press release. “This next generation of HBCU leaders are resilient, and I am honored to provide any helpful nuggets to help fuel their entrepreneurial passions.” According to a press release from PR Newswire the brand’s focal point is to celebrate the work ethic and community spirit of HBCU leaders.
