The legacy of Chadwick A. Boseman lives on. Variety reports that Netflix has just announced the Chadwick A. Boseman Scholarship at the late actor’s alma mater, Howard University. The Chadwick A. Boseman Memorial Scholarship will be geared toward incoming students at the historically Black university’s College of Fine Arts. As previously reported by AfroTech, the newly reestablished college was named after Boseman in May of 2021. The four-year scholarship is worth a whopping $5.4 million and will cover the full cost of university tuition. “It is with immense pleasure and deep gratitude that we announce the creation of an endowed scholarship in honor of alumnus, Chadwick Boseman, whose life and contributions to the arts continues to inspire,” said Howard University President Wayne A.I. A Black-led anime series starring Oscar-nominated actor LaKeith Stanfield is making its way to Netflix this week. Netflix’s “Yasuke,” which tells the legendary story of the first Black samurai in feudal Japan, follows the titular character — voiced by Stanfield — as he navigates life following his violent past, until he is tasked with bringing a mysterious child who’s wanted by dark forces back to safety. According to Complex, the series is inspired by real-life samurai Yasuke, who many believe to have traveled from Africa to Japan back in 1579. In an interview with the outlet, the series’ creator LeSean Thomas — credited for animated series such as “Boondocks” and “Black Dynamite” — detailed his sentiments about creating and leading the charge for this revolutionary project. Chadwick Boseman ‘s passing on Friday, Aug. 28 rocked the world. His fans and colleagues not only mourned his untimely death at age 43 but were also shocked by the news of his silent battle with colorectal cancer. Boseman was diagnosed with the disease in stage three in 2016 but remained tight-lipped about his health as he brought massive characters to the silver screen, including Jackie Robinson, Thurgood Marshall, and most notably, Marvel’s Black Panther. And while Boseman’s transition has been an unfortunate addition to the list of lives lost this year, it has also highlighted the need for more Black people to get regular screenings for the disease. According to the American Cancer Society, Black men and women get colon cancer at higher rates —24 and 19 percent, respectively—compared to other races. Yasuke has been found, and it’s none other than Chadwick Boseman. Deadline broke the news on Tuesday. The project has been in works for the past few years , originally being set up at Lionsgate with producer Erik Feig. Now, it’s with Feig’s Picturestart, where it will be produced with Mike De Luca’s De Luca Productions, Stephen L’Heureux’s Solipsist, Logan Coles’ X●ception Content and Boseman.
