Former US Surgeon General Billed Almost $5K For An ER Visit Due To Dehydration, Calls America ‘Home Of The Medical Bankruptcy’

The woes of the American health system have reached one of its former leaders after he received a high medical bill following a visit to the emergency room. According to Fortune, Dr. Jerome Adams, the former 20th U.S. surgeon general and Purdue University’s health equity initiatives director, took to social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to share the details of his medical trip to an out-of-town ER facility in Scottsdale, AZ, due to dehydration. The trip resulted in a hefty post-insurance bill. “Yes, folks. THIS is America. Land of the free, and home of the medical bankruptcy,” Dr. Adams told the outlet about the posted photo of the bill. The medical invoice ultimately totaled $4,896.43 after he underwent a few lab tests and three intravenous (IV) bags during his visit, though it’s unknown what was being administered to him in the IV. What’s more, he mentioned that he opted for monthly payments to tackle the large bill, but Dr. Adams knows this is not always an option...

Diébédo Francis Kéré Becomes The First Black Man To Win 'Architecture's Top Award'

Diébédo Francis Kéré has accomplished a not so easy feat as he’s reportedly become the first Black architect to earn a Pritzker Architecture Prize, or what’s being referred to as “architecture’s top award.” According to NPR, Kéré — whose work includes designs for schools and healthcare clinics — shares his architectural methods were inspired by his time in school with over 100 students who experienced scorching temperatures. “You will sit and it’s very hot inside,” Kéré said in an interview with the outlet. “And there was no light, while outside, the sunlight was abundant and in my head, I think, the idea one day grew [that] as an adult, I should make it better. I was thinking about space, about room, about how I can feel better.”

This California Man Lost $33K In A Certified Check When A Bank of America Branch Closed — Here's How He Got It Back

A California man went to deposit $33,000 in Bank of America — and never saw the money again. According to ABC7 Bay News, the California man in question — Brian Leonard — had a certified check for $33,000. The check was drawn from Leonard’s Wells Fargo account, so that he and his wife could get their kitchen remodeled. He drew a certified check in the hopes that it would “clear quickly,” as typically, certified checks clear within 24 hours of deposit. But the next day, when he checked his account to make sure he had enough money to pay his contractor, he was in for a big surprise — and not in a good way. “The woman said that there was no record of the transaction. So as far as she was concerned, no transaction happened,” he said to the outlet. And it got worse. When the California man drove over to the bank’s branch in Oakland, CA, to see what was going on, the branch was closed . Getting aggravated yet? Don’t worry — so was he, and rightly so. “When I realized the branch was closed,...

This Healthcare Veteran Established a Curriculum to End Medical Apartheid

When Dr. Susan Moore recorded that horrific video alleging medical racism before dying of COVID-19, Aubynette Rolle — like many of us — was horrified. And she decided to take action about it. “I was heartbroken to see the videos Dr. Moore recorded before her death and she is not the only one who has experienced or has recordings or allegations out there,” she said, to BlackNews.com. “I have read and seen footage so many times about Black women in the USA dying giving birth and their husbands and relatives are left with questions. In the majority of Black nations, it isn’t quite the case as infants and mothers do receive care generally from people who look like them.” With this in mind, Rolle created The R.I.C.H. Experience, which is designed to end the “medical apartheid” inherent in the American system. The R.I.C.H. Experience, which was officially launched in the fall of 2020, but has started to gain traction in recent weeks, on policy and procedure development, leadership and...
