Sarah Brown is empowering Black women through her beauty supply store. According to the Columbia Missourian, Brown is the proud owner of Beauty Trap, reportedly the first Black beauty supply store in Columbia, MO. Her transition into business ownership would be inspired by her mentor, Mary Smith, f ounder of Mary Smith’s Beauty Salon, who encouraged her foray into the cosmetology business. “I taught Sarah how to do hair for Black customers, something they don’t teach you at school,” Smith told the Columbia Missourian. “Sarah and I have both taken classes for hair over the years, and we teach each other what we have learned.” Brown was emboldened to open two salon locations, though they both had to close for several months due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, which negatively impacted many small business owners. “While we were...

Then after buying Play Beauty Supply, Coleman would travel to hair salons and stylists to bring greater attention to their products. “She leans on me to bring in the new 21st-century ideas, the delivery, websites, marketing. It’s a balance with each other,” Coleman said....

While attending Norfolk State University, the Virginia Beach native designed for every organization on the campus. However, she noticed there was a void in HBCU fashion. Coming from grandparents who owned one of the first Black-owned beauty supply companies in her hometown, Jones embarked on her own entrepreneurial journey by launching Tones of Melanin.
Two students have made beauty supply products more accessible for their peers. While attending the University of Michigan, Mia Wilson and Rico Ozuna-Harrison recognized securing beauty products for people of color was far from easy. The nearest beauty supply store requires a 20-minute drive to Ypsilanti, MI, forcing students to purchase last resort products from nearby stores. “Supplies aren’t directly on campus and there are no stores or beauty supplies for students of color nearby. The stores on campus are just Walgreens and CVS,” Wilson told AfroTech. “So, oftentimes you can’t find the proper products that will best suit our hair types in those stores.” The inconvenience sparked the inception of YOUniversity Beauty Supply Machine through their business Innovending LLC, to ensure Black and brown students were represented at the University of Michigan. The beauty dispensary can be found in the basement of the university’s Union building and students can purchase hair oil, durags,...
