Promising opportunities are on the way for college athlete Great Osobor. ESPN reports Osobor, the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, has settled on the University of Washington after entering the NCAA transfer portal. The forward previously played for Utah State University and had already expressed interest in moving to Washington after Utah coach Danny Sprinkle was hired on as the school’s newest coach, according to Fox Sports. “I would like to thank God for putting me in this position,” Osobor said, according to ESPN. “Washington will allow me to maximize my potential as a player in my final year of college basketball. Coach [Danny] Sprinkle has been with me every step of the way since I came from England, and I cannot wait to help the Huskies get back to the NCAA tournament.” Osobor’s move also signals a great precedence in the age of name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals. Google Funds Guaranteed Basic Income Program In California's Bay Area To Help Give Up To $12K Per Month To Families

A program working to “break the cycle of homelessness for good” in the Bay Area of California has launched, and Google is backing its mission. Google.org, the charitable arm of Google, is a funding partner for It All Adds Up (Bay Area Thriving Families Study), a pilot program that is providing 450 families in the Bay Area who have faced homelessness with guaranteed basic income for a year. Each family is given a randomized amount of either $1,000 a month for 12 months or $50 a month for 12 months, according to the program’s website. Its fellow funding partner is J-PAL North America, a regional office of the global research center Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab housed at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Bay Area families that receive services from Compass Family Services or Hamilton Families and are part of their rental subsidy/rapid re-housing programs qualify for the recurring cash payments as long as they are in the final three months of their housing subsidy....

The Currys Plan To Install 150 Libraries In Oakland To Boost The Literacy Rate For Black And Latinx Youth

Stephen and Ayesha Curry are taking action to increase the literacy rate for children through their Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation. ABC7 reports that the Currys have unveiled the first of 150 Little Town Libraries that will be spread out across Oakland, CA — with an aim to provide 30,000 books to the youth. The libraries are chosen by partners in the community such as Oakland Literacy Coalition, Oakland Public Library, and Black Cultural Zone. First up for the installments was Franklin Elementary. The power couple’s foundation — launched in 2019 — is all about providing kids and families in Oakland, the Bay Area, and across the U.S. with the resources necessary to excel. Their latest initiative is working to combat the statistic of one in three children reading at grade level by the end of third grade in addition to the low levels of Black and Latinx elementary students reading at grade level. According to the outlet, “only 15.4% of Black and 12.5% of Latino/a elementary students are...

Michael Jordan & The Jordan Brand Select The Oakland Black Business Fund As A Community Grant Recipient

Michael Jordan and the Jordan Brand continue to make power moves within the Black community. PR Newswire reports that the Oakland Black Business Fund (OBBF) has been selected as the inaugural recipient of Michael Jordan and the Jordan Brand’s Community Grant. The initiative is part of the organization’s Black Community Commitment Grant Program and will be used to fund OBBF’s mission to build peer-to-peer relationships within Black business owners, Black technical assistance providers and tech companies. OBBF aims to offer a sustainable growth model for underserved and under-funded businesses coming out of the Bay Area. “OBBF has had the opportunity to partner with some of the country’s leading companies and financial institutions to support Black entrepreneurs in the Bay Area while addressing systemic biases that perpetuate the funding gap for Black businesses,” said OBBF Co-Founder Trevor Parham in an official statement. “We are grateful to the Jordan Brand for their support as we...

Here's How One Family Acquired 20 Jamba Juice Franchises in the San Fransisco Bay Area

The Redmon family just acquired 20 Jamba Juice franchises in the San Francisco Bay Area! According to Black Business, Charlayne Redmon and her husband Dwayne, —– along with their four children —  kept it all in the family with the new acquisition in their native home of San Francisco, California. After launching CFO to Small Business, a financial consulting company for small business owners, the Redmon’s had the vision of expanding into the food industry which led them to consider becoming franchise owners. Initially, Dwayne acquired a contract with the Jamba Juice franchise through CFO to Small Business and from there he expressed his family’s interest in ownership. After 16 corporate locations were sold off, the family made an offer to buy it. From there, they would go on to eventually manage to purchase two more locations from private owners before building two others from the ground up. “None of us had ever worked at a Jamba Juice. In addition, the director of operations was...

New Black Tech Enclaves Cannot Repeat Silicon Valley's Harm

For the past few decades, Silicon Valley has been thought of as the heart of America’s tech industry. It now hosts the headquarters of thousands of tech companies, including Apple, Facebook, Netflix, and more. While Silicon Valley has dominated the scene, other cities are on the come up, as well . Atlanta, Georgia, Raleigh, North Carolina, and Austin, Texas are just a few of the communities more recently seeing their tech scenes begin to boom. However, as other cities transform into tech enclaves of their own, it poses significant questions about how to ensure the harsh consequences of Silicon Valley are not repeated throughout the country. “While Silicon Valley often makes headlines for innovative technology and disruptive ideas, local families are experiencing a very different kind of disruption: displacement from their homes,” Justine Marcus of the Urban Displacement Project wrote. Marcus also added:     “Rents and housing prices have far outpaced relatively stagnant wages for...

Are Big Tech Companies Too Much Of a Burden For The Communities They're in?

As tech continues to grow, new cities are playing host to some of the industry’s biggest companies. Although Silicon Valley in the San Francisco Bay Area has long been regarded as America’s tech hub, cities like Austin and Atlanta are becoming rising stars. While tech companies often tout the benefits they can bring to a city, the reality is that their presence can often be a burden — and the bigger the company, the more weight a city has to bear. In the United States, San Francisco ranks as the country’s second most expensive city to live in . So expensive in fact, that a family earning a six-figure salary would still be considered low-income . The tech industry by itself cannot be completely blamed for San Francisco’s skyrocketing housing costs because there are other factors like housing shortages and wages that refuse to accommodate the new costs of living. However, as companies like Facebook and Google build entire campuses and housing solely for their employees, they...

Google Will Invest $1 Billion Over Ten Years To Help The Bay Area's Housing Crisis

In San Francisco, homelessness is a highly visible issue. The city’s initial estimates from its 2019 point-in-time count suggest that there’s been an increase of 15-20 percent over the 2017 count. Many within the city feel that tech companies who made Silicon Valley their home need to take responsibility for contributing to the issue. On Tuesday, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai announced that the company will invest $1 billion in housing across the Bay Area. Pichai shared that over the next ten years, Google will repurpose at least $750 million of its existing office space, adding: “This will enable us to support the development of at least 15,000 new homes at all income levels in the Bay Area, including housing options for middle and low-income families. We hope this plays a role in addressing the chronic shortage of affordable housing options for long-time middle and low income residents.” In addition, Google will put $250 million toward “incentives” for other developers to build 5,000...

Silicon Valley Is Finding It Harder To Recruit and Retain Workers, Study Finds

When it comes to the tech industry, Silicon Valley has long reigned as the place to be. However, new research shows things may now be changing. A report by the Brunswick Group has found that Silicon Valley is having difficulties locating new workers, and this may cause issues for the area’s future. For the report, the Brunswick Group surveyed 300 tech workers employed in Silicon Valley in order to understand the industry’s health, market opportunities, impending threats and more. Researchers found that 74 percent of tech workers expect China to be the most serious rival to the San Francisco Bay Area. Respondents also named Austin, Texas, to most likely rival within the United States. This should come as no surprise, especially with Amazon now expanding its Austin Tech Hub . Outside of Austin, cities like Atlanta, Georgia and Raleigh, North Carolina are also becoming major tech hubs . This year, Google even announced plans to expand its Atlanta office . Another thing that came up in...
