Music Platform Bandcamp Pledges to Donate Juneteenth Sales to NAACP Every Year

The inhumane murder of George Floyd and countless other Black citizens have ignited protests around the world as many demand the end of unjust treatment toward Black people. In the midst of calls for justice, some major organizations are doing their part to support the fight against police brutality. One such company is the online music platform, Bandcamp. The artist-centered retailer recently announced via a press release that the company will be donating 100 percent of their share of sales on June 19 to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund in honor of the Juneteenth holiday. Not only has the company vowed to commemorate this Juneteenth holiday by supporting the NAACP, but will continue to do so for every Juneteenth thereafter. Along with the Juneteenth funding, Bandcamp will also donate “an additional $30,000 per year to partner with organizations that fight for racial justice and create opportunities for people of color.” The NAACP Legal Defense Fund is a 501(c)(3) legal organization...

Bandcamp Is Opening A Record Store in Oakland

Online music publishing platform Bandcamp is opening a record store and performance space in downtown Oakland. The shop is set to open February 1 and will be stocked with records of over five million albums available on the platform. The IRL space will soon be the site of an all-ages show that will be featured in a new video series, according to the company. “We’re thrilled to join the thriving Oakland arts community that includes artists and labels like The Seshen, Jay Stone, n5MD, and Slumberland Records,” the company wrote in a blog post. Bandcamp plans to partner with community organizations like the Oakland School for the Arts, Bay Area Girls Rock Camp, and Transgender Law Center. The move makes sense for Bandcamp, a company that has staked its reputation and growth on its relationships with artists. Going beyond its digital product to a brick and mortar location in a city with a thriving music scene should allow them to engage even more with the community they’ve built their...

One Year After Calling Out Racism In The Music Industry, The Black Music Action Coalition Grades Progress

Last summer, the Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC) called out major record labels and streaming services in the music industry to do more to address their racial inequities. One year later, the U.S.-based organization has launched their own “report card” to grade various companies in the industry on how much progress they’ve made so far. Over the past year, many companies and corporations have announced their own initiatives and multi-million dollar funds to tackle systemic racism in America, but the BMAC didn’t think that was enough to create change in the industry. In an attempt to hold companies accountable, the organization decided to publish a report measuring all public pledges and promises made in the wake of George Floyd’s murder and the music industry’s widely-observed initiative, #TheShowMustBePaused. According to its website, the BMAC shared that it sent out a brief survey to over 60 executives at more than 20 companies. Their results reported that “five replies came...

Audiomack Teams Up With Slum2School To Help Students In Nigeria Gain Access To Quality Education

Audiomack, a youth-driven music streaming platform, has announced a historic donation to the Slum2School initiative. In a press release announcement (via Business Insider), it was revealed that the company has partnered with the Slum2School initiative in Africa founded by Otto Orondaam. The Slum2School initiative is a volunteer-driven development organization that helps students in remote locations across Africa gain access to such things as quality education, entrepreneurial skills, and psychosocial support. Audiomack donated $5,000 worth of tablets and headsets to the organization, which turned out to be 40 learning sets for students. These sets will go to students in Nigeria, who were displaced by the COVID-19 pandemic, and who otherwise didn’t have access to the learning materials necessary to get the education they needed from home. “While the Coronavirus pandemic has impacted all aspects of our lives including the education sector, we recognize the increased gap on children...

Donate to These Black-Owned Businesses Affected By The Protests

The murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has sparked widespread unrest, both peaceful and riotous. Amid the global uprising, which began on May 26, several businesses have been a casualty of protestors’ war against police brutality, including Black-owned stores. Thousands of people have made their way to the streets for justice, to call for defunding the police, and to spread awareness of other Black bodies that have been executed via state-sanctioned murders, particularly Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery . Windows have been shattered, vehicles have been burned and property damage is done. Additionally, some Black businesses have suffered economically due to mandatory curfews. As activists continue to organize, strategize and mobilize on the ground, donate to or simply #BuyBlack at any of these Black businesses. Pure Oasis This Boston cannabis retailer, the state’s first and only Black-run cannabis retailer, was hit by looters. According to The Boston...

SoundCloud Reveals $15M Plan to Support Musicians on Platform

Musicians are another group of people who took a large hit during the pandemic, but SoundCloud is stepping up to help the creators on their platform in need. Variety reported that on Thursday, the online music streaming site announced a series of initiatives they plan to kick off to garner more attention for artists using the platform. SoundCloud described the plan as a $15 million investment to provide promotional support through their “artist accelerator program.” “As the coronavirus crisis has unfolded, we’ve seen a global outpouring of tracks on SoundCloud with a 50% surge in creators uploading in the past month alone,” CEO Kerry Trainor wrote in a statement on their website. “But behind this creative response, we know there continues to be financial loss and uncertainty for our creator community.” Programs within the plan include a new direct fan-support button for all artists, $5 million in free promotional support for all creators to drive more plays, a $10 million artist...
