This Woman Went From Public Assistance To Millionaire Status Off A Side Hustle — Here's How She Did It

From benefits to ballin’, this Black woman millionaire story is nothing if not inspiring. Arnita Johnson-Hall told her inspiring story to CNBC, and her achievements are nothing if not remarkable. The story begins in 2007, when she was a single mother living in Dallas, TX, and working a dead-end job making a measly $12/hour. Because she was making such a pittance, this future millionaire qualified for all sorts of public assistance programs — including Section 8 housing. And without it, there would be no way she’d have survived. “ My entire income went towards rent, gas, daycare, and, regrettably, payday loans in order to survive until my next paycheck,” she explained to the outlet. When Johnson-Hall was offered a $60,000/year job, it looked like there was a light at the end of the tunnel. But then, when the company ran her credit, she was denied for having a score below 400 (It’s worth noting that while some states — including Texas — permit employers to run credit checks on their...

Hinge Distributes $100 To Single Parents For Childcare Right Before Valentine's Day

Hinge is here to save your love life just in time for Valentine’s Day. According to a press release, the dating app will partner with singer and songwriter Soko to distribute $100 to parents for child care needs. The financial relief is timely, as the dating scene can be difficult to navigate with children in the mix. In fact, Hinge collected data revealing 63 percent of singles with children – and 73 percent of LGBTQ+ parents find it difficult to make time for their love life. The financial nudge aims to remind parents to prioritize their needs and get out into the dating world. “Sometimes, I get lost in that world where I’m ‘just’ being a mom non-stop. I forget my core essence and can’t even imagine going on a date or having a romantic life. That’s why it’s important for us to just put ourselves out there. To try to find love beyond parenthood. Even if you’re not in a place to do it right now, just reminding yourself you deserve is important,” Soko said in the press release. Hinge...

This Mother-Daughter Duo is Now on a Mission to Help Former Inmates Secure Jobs

Mother-daughter entrepreneur duo, Teresa Hodge and Laurin Leonard are doing their part to tackle the problem a lot of ex-offenders have — getting a job. People who have past criminal records find it harder to secure jobs, apply for academic financial aid, and even vote. R3 Score, a company founded by Hodge and Leonard, focuses on connecting qualified people with good opportunities via “a new criminal background check for a new world.” According to Forbes , the Baltimore-based company’s initial aim was to provide a new way of hiring companies to assess the risk of formerly incarcerated people. However, since the spread of COVID-19, their business model has changed. “From the moment the coronavirus hit, we recognized we could no longer rely on the goodwill of businesses,” Hodge told Forbes. “They weren’t in a place where they wanted to be more inclusive and considerate of individuals who had conviction records.” R3 Score’s new model empowers potential hires rather than targeting...

Lyft Will Now Run Daily Background Checks on Drivers

We’ve all heard horror stories of Lyft and Uber drivers sexually assaulting and committing other crimes against passengers. One Uber driver was arrested last week for trying to rob a passenger’s home after dropping him off at the airport. Now Lyft will require continuous background checks to tackle issues with sketchy drivers, according to Engadget . The company previously ran annual background checks on its active drivers, but it will now conduct daily scans to ensure the safety of its riders. A CNN report from last year found that 103 Uber drivers and 18 Lyft drivers were accused of sexual assaults. Four of the Lyft drivers have been convicted; however, more stories of passengers being put in uncomfortable situations have surfaced. A recent Twitter thread by actor and comedian Anna Gillcrist highlights some keys issues faced when reporting inappropriate behavior by drivers to Lyft. Last night I took a @lyft home from my friends bachelorette. It was a line, so there were two people...
